In 1985/6 the Under 21 National Women's Cricket Championship was renamed as the Betty Wilson Shield. In 1996/7, the age group was changed to Under 19.
The Betty Wilson Shield is named in honour of one of the greatest female player to represent Australia. Betty was a right hand batter and right arm off spin bowler who played Test cricket from 1947-1958. She achieved many milestones including being the first Australian woman to score a Test century against England and, in 1957/8, becoming the first Australian player, male or female, to score a Test double of 100 runs and 10 wickets in the same match. She also took the first hat trick in a women's Test. In 1985, she was the first woman cricketer inducted into the Australian Sporting Hall of Fame. She also had a distinguished career with Victoria.
