News - Rose Bowl 2008
From www.cricket.com.au: 16 March 2008 - Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars retain Rose Bowl in emphatic style
The Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars produced its most dominant batting display of the series to retain the Rose Bowl with an eight-wicket victory over New Zealand at Bert Sutcliffe Oval in Lincoln this afternoon.
Chasing New Zealand’s imposing 7-249, the Australian top order was brilliant, with a century opening stand setting up the win with more than three overs to spare and with the loss of just two wickets.
Shelley Nitschke scored 82 and Alex Blackwell 91 before Lisa Sthalekar (61 not out) and captain Karen Rolton (four not out) notched the winnings runs to secure the series 3-2.
Earlier, New Zealand looked headed for its first Rose Bowl Series triumph when it posted 249 after winning the toss. All of the White Ferns top and middle order made handy contributions but it was again Nicola Browne and Sara McGlashan that led the way.
The pair both scored 50 before Sophie Devine’s 40-run, 27-ball innings, set the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars its highest total of the series to retain the Rose Bowl.
Sarah Andrews (3-45) and Emma Sampson (2-52) were the best of Australia’s bowlers, while Delissa Kimmince took her first international wicket in six overs that yielded 1-18.
Nitschke and Alex Blackwell’s response to the White Ferns total was a brilliant 144-run opening stand that had the runs flowing in the first 30 overs with 20 boundaries.
Nitschke’s departure in the 30th over had no effect on the run chase with Sthalekar joining Blackwell at the crease.
The Australian women’s player of the year scored eight boundaries in her 61 from 55 balls to deny New Zealand its first Rose Bowl in almost 10 years.
From www.cricket.com.au: 16 March 2008 - Aussies clinch Rose Bowl Sportal
The Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars have come back from trailing New Zealand 2-1 in the Rose Bowl series to prevail 3-2 on Sunday afternoon.
The Aussies clinched the best-of-five series courtesy of an eight-wicket victory at Bert Sutcliffe Oval in Lincoln.
After bowling first, Australia was set a sizeable target of 250 after the White Ferns managed to register a score of 7-249 in their allotment of 50 overs.
But what seemed like an arduous task was made to look like a cakewalk by Southern Stars openers Shelley Nitschke (82) and Alex Blackwell (91) as they combined to post a mammoth 144-run opening stand.
From then on, the result never looked in doubt as Lisa Sthalekar (61 not out) joined in the run feast to ensure the Rose Bowl remained on Australian soil with three overs to spare.
Earlier, Sarah Andrews proved to be the pick of the Aussie bowlers with figures of 3-45 and Emma Sampson (2-52) provided valuable assistance.
Sara McGlashan and Nicola Browne were the standouts for the Kiwis, both notching half-centuries.
From www.cricket.com.au: 15 March 2008 - Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars set up Rose Bowl Series decider
The Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars have ensured the Rose Bowl Series will go down the final match after a tense six-run win over New Zealand at Bert Sutcliffe Oval in Lincoln, this afternoon.
Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars fast bowler Emma Sampson was the player of the match, with her career-best 5-30 helping Australia bowl out New Zealand for 205 in the final over chasing Australia’s 6-211.
Alex Blackwell (62) and Lisa Sthalekar (69) were the standout performers of a much-improved top order batting effort for Australia. The pair added 123 for the second wicket to allow batters down the order to play freely as the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars posted their highest total of the series.
New Zealand bowled well in the opening overs but Blackwell and Sthalekar limited the effect of Helen Watson (1-17) and Sophie Devine (2-35) before increasing their scoring rate as the innings progressed.
Despite two Sampson wickets in the first five overs, New Zealand’s run chase looked in good hands with captain Haidee Tiffen and Sara McGlashan steering the score to 107 before Ellyse Perry broke the partnership.
McGlashan’s departure for 39 gave Australia’s bowlers an opening and Sampson and Sthalekar shared the next four wickets as New Zealand tumbled to 7-141.
Wicket-keeper Rachel Priest mounted a counter attack however her run out for 25 in the 48th over was the home team’s final chance of victory.
Delissa Kimmince made her debut for Australia in the match and the 18-year-old bowled seven overs for 28.
With the series locked at 2-2, the final match will be played tomorrow at Bert Sutcliffe Oval in Lincoln.
From www.cricket.com.au: 15 March 2008 - Southern Stars bounce back Sportal
The Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars have squared the five-match Rose Bowl Series at two games apiece after a six-run victory over New Zealand at Bert Sutcliffe Oval in Lincoln on Saturday.
After the Southern Stars posted 6-211 from their allotted 50 overs, Emma Sampson (5-30) ensured New Zealand was bowled out for 205 in the 48th over in what was a match winning performance.
Alex Blackwell (62) and Lisa Sthalekar (69) were the standouts with the bat for the Southern Stars as the duo put on 123 for the second wicket in an impressive performance.
Sophie Devine (2-35) was the pick of the New Zealand bowlers, but Alex Blackwell and Sthalekar ensured the Southern Stars posted a more than competitive total.
In reply, New Zealand was cruising at 2-107 in the 25th over, before Ellyse Perry (2-51) picked up the wicket of Sara McGlashan for 39 as the rot set in for the home side.
Sampson and Sthalekar (2-39) picked up the next four wickets as the Southern Stars got back on top and despite some late hitting from Rachel Priest (25) the visitors proved too strong.
The final game will be played in Lincoln on Sunday afternoon where both sides will have the chance to claim the Rose Bowl Series.
From www.cricket.com.au: 12 March, 2008 - New Zealand one win from claiming Rose Bowl Series
New Zealand has taken a 2-1 Rose Bowl Series lead after a five-wicket victory over the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars in Lincoln this afternoon.
Chasing 171, New Zealand’s middle order duo of Sara McGlashan (41) and Nicola Browne (59 not out) were the difference, with the pair posting a 100-run partnership to ensure the home team moved to within one victory of its first Rose Bowl Series triumph since 1999.
After Australia captain Karen Rolton won the toss and elected to bat, the top order failed to fire with none of the top five batters reaching double figures as the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars slumped to 5-24 in the 17th over.
Two wickets in the first over of the match set the tone, before Jodie Purves (21) and Ellyse Perry (51) - as well as a strong contribution from Leonie Coleman (44) – rescued the Australian innings for the second time in as many matches.
Purves and Perry added 40 for the sixth wicket and then the New South Wales teenager combined with Coleman in an 80-run stand. Both Perry and Coleman recorded their highest one-day international scores and their partnership was scored off just 14 overs.
After being tied down early in her innings, Coleman accelerated her scoring and compiled 44 off 42 balls, including five boundaries, to give the Australian bowlers a competitive total to defend.
New Zealand opening bowler Helen Watson was the pick of the home team’s attack with 1-11 off 10 overs.
Rolton pulled a surprise at the start of New Zealand’s innings and threw the ball to off-spinner Shelley Nitshcke, a move that had immediate success with the left-armer trapping Amy Mason LBW for eight in the second over.
Two wickets to Kirsten Pike had New Zealand in trouble at 3-36, but McGlashan and Browne exceeded the earlier efforts of Purves and Perry by compiling a century stand to guide the home team to a position of strength midway through the innings.
Despite McGlashan’s departure for 41 in the 34th over, the White Ferns cruised to victory and a 2-1 series lead with almost eight overs to spare.
Pike (2-32) and Nitschke (2-45) each took two wickets for the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars.
“Our batting let us down again and losing five early wickets was obviously not ideal. However I thought Jodie and Ellyse did really well to get the innings going and Leonie Coleman was great,” Rolton said.
“When we had them at 3-36 we were in with a chance, but they batted too well. We’re having a bit of trouble getting Nicola Browne out at the moment.
“Down 2-1 in the series, we know exactly what we need to do in the last two matches, so we’ll be looking to improve the batting on Saturday to give ourselves a chance.”
From www.cricket.com.au: 9 March 2008 - New Zealand levels Rose Bowl Series
New Zealand has levelled the Rose Bowl Series with an 82-run victory over the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars in the second one-day international in Lincoln, Christchurch, this afternoon.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, the White Ferns posted an impressive 7-238 with Nicole Browne and Amy Satterthwaite leading the way with an 85-run fifth wicket partnership.
Browne and Satterthwaite both scored 48 and opener Katey Martin added 45 as New Zealand recovered from yesterday's shaky batting effort to dominate the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars attack.
Only Shelley Nitschke was able to stem the flow of runs and the left-arm spinner was the pick of the Australian attack with 1-29 off 10 overs.
A top order collapse doused hopes of a second straight Australian victory with Helen Watson and Sophie Devine combining to reduce the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars to 5-57 in the 20th over.
Jodie Purves was the stand-out with the bat for Australia with her first one-day international half century (56 from 84 balls). The other main contributors in the total of 156 were Ellyse Perry (28) and Nitschke (25).
Perry and Purves added 82 for the sixth wicket but the teenager's departure in the 40th over sparked another mini-collapse, with the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars tailenders managing another 17 runs before Lucy Doolan snatched three quick wickets and a run out to secure New Zealand's victory.
From www.cricket.com.au: 8 March 2008 - Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars take early Rose Bowl Series lead
The Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars have taken an early lead in the five-match Rose Bowl Series with a comprehensive 63-run victory over New Zealand in Lincoln this afternoon.
Chasing 5-189, New Zealand was bowled out for 126 in the 42nd over as the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars rebounded from Thursday Twenty20 loss with an all-round team performance.
Alex Blackwell top-scored for Australia with 44 and opening partner Shelley Nitschke added 38 in a first-wicket stand 76.
In contrast to Thursday's uncharacteristic effort, all of the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars' batters produced handy contributions. None were more effective than Jodie Purves who compiled a brisk 29 from 23 balls late in the innings in her first match back from injury.
A partnership between Purves and Kate Blackwell (27 from 32) added 42 in six overs late in the innings to ensure New Zealand were forced to chase a competitive total.
The Australian attack was able to keep consistent pressure on New Zealand's batters and only captain Haidee Tiffen (37 not out) was able to withstand the pressure as regular wickets fell around her.
At 2-59 in the 20th over, New Zealand appeared in a good position to challenge for victory, but Amy Satterthwaite's dismissal for 24 soon after the drinks break was the key moment of their innings as Australia assumed control.
The wicket-taking for the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars was evenly spread with Emma Sampson, Kirsten Pike and Lisa Sthalekar claiming two each, and Ellyse Perry and Sarah Andrews one apiece.
From www.cricket.com.au: 6 March 2008 - Kiwis defeat Southern Stars
The Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars have suffered a four-wicket loss to New Zealand in a Twenty20 international at Bert Sutcliffe Oval in Christchurch on Thursday afternoon.
The Southern Stars could only manage 9-80 off their allotted 20 overs and the Kiwis cruised to victory in the 18th over with the loss of just six wickets.
After losing the toss and being sent in to bat, the Southern Stars made the worst possible start when Shelley Nitchske was dismissed on the second ball of the day.
Alex Blackwell, skipper Karen Rolton, Lisa Sthalekar, Sarah Edwards and Kate Blackwell all departed shortly after leaving the Southern Stars reeling at 6-53 in the 15th over.
Some brief resistance from the lower order provided the Southern Stars with a glimmer of hope, but Sarah Burke (3-15) and the other New Zealand bowlers ensured the home side kept the visitors to a modest total.
Four early wickets in New Zealand's innings halted the home team's chase, but Sara McGlashan (25 from 21 balls), captain Haidee Tiffen (15 not out) and Amy Satterthwaite (nine not out) guided the Kiwis home.
Nitschke was the pick of the Australian bowlers with 2-17 off four overs, while Emma Sampson, Ellyse Perry and Sthalekar were the other wicket-takers.
Rolton was disappointed with the Southern Stars performance, especially after a productive one-day series against England on home soil earlier this year.
"The conditions were good. The weather was fine and a bit windy and the pitch was good, but we just didn't score enough runs," she said.
"We were going to bat first anyway and were looking at around 150, so we were a little disappointed."
"The New Zealand girls bowled really well, they bowled good lines and kept the pace off the ball and made it difficult for us to score freely."
"There are still plenty of positives to take out of the match and the batting will need to improve. I thought we bowled and fielded really well, held all our catches and bowled with good consistency."
"Our batters just tended to hit the ball at one pace straight to the fielders a bit too often, but with a bit of work in the lead-up to the next match that can easily be fixed."
The Southern Stars will now take on New Zealand in a five-game Rose Bowl Series which commences on Saturday.
Rolton said she was looking forward to the series.
"The one-day series should be a great contest and we're really looking forward to the challenge over the next couple of weeks," Rolton said.
From www.cricket.com.au: 20 February 2008 - Stars squad for NZ tour announced
The Cricket Australia Women’s National Selection Panel today announced the 14-player Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars squad to take on the New Zealand White Ferns in the Rose Bowl Series in Christchurch.
After a drawn one-day international series and a Test loss against England, selectors have made two changes for the series, with Western Australia’s Renee Chappell and Queensland’s Delissa Kimmince set to earn their first international caps.
Jodie Purves has also regained her place and has been selected in the 14-player squad as a specialist batter after a broken thumb forced her to miss the series against England.
South Australia’s Kris Britt and Queensland’s Melissa Bulow are the players to make way for the newcomers.
Australia is the current holder of the Rose Bowl having won last year’s series 3-2. The series comprises five one-day matches, with a Twenty20 international to be played in the lead-up. All matches will be played at Bert Sutcliffe Oval in Christchurch.
The Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars squad for the series is:
- Karen Rolton (captain) SA 33
- Lisa Sthalekar (vice-captain) NSW 28

- Alex Blackwell NSW 24
- Kate Blackwell NSW 24
- Renee Chappell WA 24
- Leonie Coleman NSW 29
- Sarah Edwards VIC 26
- Delissa Kimmince QLD 18
- Shelley Nitschke SA 31
- Ellyse Perry NSW 17

Chair of Selectors Margaret Jennings said: “The Rose Bowl Series provides us with an opportunity to bring in new players and see what they can add to the squad in the lead-up to the World Cup next year. Both Delissa and Renee have been selected to fill positions we feel need improving.
“The players excluded from the squad are not out of World Cup calculations by any means but they will need to go away and work hard to earn another opportunity.
“The selectors are looking for a consistency of performance from the team and to maintain that standard. We’re looking to find players that are capable of producing those performances.”
