(Jan 29th) Blues take their fifth title in the 2000/2001 WNCL Final.....

The NSWIS Blues defeated the Queensland Konica Fire 2-0 in the best of three finals series conducted at Memorial Oval, Bankstown on 26-28 January.

This was the Blues 5th consecutive National League title (1996/7 to 2000/01) during which time, they have been undefeated over 12 consecutive finals matches.

The first match was played on Australia Day with the Blues captain, Belinda Clark, winning the toss and electing to bat. The ground was in superb condition and the Blues all combined to put on 5/234. Michelle Goszko lead the way with 80 - her best for NSW at this level - and she was well supported in a 116 run 3rd wicket partnership by Lisa Sthalekar who alse scored her best for NSW with 43. Clark made 43 and debutant Shannon Cunneen made 21no off 25 balls.

Cindy Kross was the only Fire bowler to concede less than 4 runs per over as she bowled her 10 overs for 16 runs. Tricia Brown (2/57) and Kelly Klibbe (2/58) were the only multiple wicket-takers.

Queensland began the run chase well before a double change in bowlers slowed the run rate down. Openers Vanessa Pickering and Melissa Bulow both made 30s but got bogged down and put a lot of pressure on the middle and lower order to up the tempo. Only Sally Cooper 78no off 63 balls responded to the challenge as the Fire were all out 33 runs short with 9 balls remaining.

Emma Liddell was the 3rd Blue to achieve a PB at this level - taking an outstanding 4/33 (only marred by an 11 runs last over), Bronwyn Calver took 3/48 and the remaining wickets fell to run outs, 2 of them direct. Sthalekar bowled a fine spell in the middle session to only concede 20 runs from her 10 overs.

Saturday saw the Fire win the toss and elect to bat but depsite getting off to a quicker start than the day before, good fielding from the Blues (in particular, two outstanding catches - one each from Julie Hayes and Cunneen) and a more consistent bowling effort saw the Fire all out out for 137. Bulow top scored with 30 for the Fire while Liddell continued her excellent form with the ball to take 3/25. Sthalekar followed up Friday with 2/26 while the other 4 bowlers each took 1 wicket.

The Blues scored the required runs for the loss of only 3 wickets in 34 overs - Clark finishing on 76no from 93 balls. The only minor blemish was the loss of 2 wickets when the score was on 70 but Clark and Cunneen steered the Blues home with an unbeaten 68 runs partnership. Bronwyn Buckley was the best of the Fire bowlers with 2/35.

Emma Liddell, with 7 wickets, was named Player of the Finals while Karen Rolton from the SA Scorpions was named Player of the Series - she scored 492 runs @ 70.29 and took 11 wickets @ 20.36.

The new 22 player Australian squad will be announced this week while the country's Under 17 players will be busy preparing for their national championships to be held in Campbelltown in March.
