VIC SPIRIT NSW BREAKERS SA SCORPIONS WESTERN FURY QUEENSLAND FIRE

Commonwealth Bank National Women's Cricket League

Victoria Spirit are the WNCL champions for 2004/5 after defeating the NSW Breakers 2-1 in the best of three final series played at Bankstown. The Spirit repeated the Breakers' feat of last season, coming back to win the title after losing the first match.

At the post-match presentation, SA Scorpions' captain Karen Rolton was named Player of the Series while NSW Breakers' captain Julie Hayes was named Player of the Finals.

Final 1 Friday 11 February:

The Vic Spirit was the toss and sent the Breakers in. The Breakers only lost 3 wickets in posting a competitive 200. An opening partnership of 103 between Lisa Keightley (49 off 115) and Shannon Cunneen (56 off 87) was complemented by an unbroken 4th wicket partnership of 51 between Michelle Goszko (43* off 45) and Martha Winch (21* off 18). Jane Franklin (1/31 off 9) and Julie Hunter (1/58 off 9) were the only wicket-takers.

The Spirit's reply got off to a bad start when their two leading batters, Clark (6 off 22) and Jones (2 off 20), were back in the pavilion with only 23 runs on the board. Sarah Edwards (64 off 118) combined with Kelly Applebee (30 off 71) for a partnership of 71 and Louise Broadfoot (30 off 41) for a partnership of 41.

However the required run rate was heading above a run a ball and series of three run outs combined with some tight bowling saw the Spirit all out off the first ball of the last over for 179. Julie Hayes took 4/31 off 10 while Sarah Aley took 2/26 off 8.1.

Final 2 Saturday 12 February:

The NSW Breakers won the toss and batted but were nothing like the team from the day before as they were all out in the 44th over for their lowest score in the history of the WNCL - 71.

Only three batters topped double figures with #10, Sarah Andrews, recording her highest score in the WNCL with an unbeaten 19 from 37 balls. Keightley (13 off 42) and Alex Blackwell (13 off 81) were the other batters. Clea Smith took career best figures of 4/10 while 4 run outs did nothing to help the Breakers' cause.

The Vic Spirit, batting before lunch, were soon in trouble themselves at 2/6 with Edwards (3 off 6) and Jones (0 off 4) out. Belinda Clark (20 off 65) and Kelly Applebee (27* off 100) added 36 before a mini-collapse saw the Spirit at 5/48. However, Applebee and the experienced Fitzpatrick (12* off 40) saw the Spirit home with 5 wickets and 65 balls to spare. Hayes took 2/18 off 10 while Andrews and Emma Twining finished with 1/10 off 6 and 1/12 off 7 respectively.

Final 3 Sunday 13 February:

The Breakers again won the toss but this time elected to field. They restricted the Spirit to a gettable 6/159 despite a flurry of 35 runs off the last 3 overs.

Several batters got starts but none topped 30 for the Spirit with Broadfoot (29* off 39) and Jones (28 off 67) the best. Lisa Sthalekar took 2/26 off 10 while Hayes took 2/37 off 9 to finish with 8 wickets for the finals and a new WNCL season record of 19.

The Breakers reply never really got off the ground as they stumbled to be all out for 109 in the 44th over. Alex Blackwell top scored with 24 off 52 while twin Kate remained unbeaten on 17 off 36.
