Breakers claim one-day crown, 12 February 2011
New South Wales have taken out their sixth successive Women's National Cricket League title after defeating Victoria by 49-runs under the Duckworth-Lewis method at the SCG on Saturday.
The Breakers were cruising at 2-193 after 35 overs chasing a target of 264 when the heavens opened forcing an early end to proceedings and handing victory to the home side.
Opener Alex Blackwell led the way for the Breakers scoring an unbeaten 68, while fellow opener Leah Poulton (51) and Sarah Coyte (44 not out) were the stars with the bat as NSW equalled their own record of six straight titles set in 2001/02.
It also goes some way to making up for the loss to the Spirit in last weekend's Women's Twenty20 final.
Earlier, after winning the toss and electing to field the Breakers made a strong start with the ball restricting the Spirit to 3-49 early in their innings.
But Rachael Haynes and Sarah Elliott came together and put on a vital 63-run stand that got the Spirit innings back on track.
Haynes (68), Emma Inglis (47) and Elliott (30) were the backbone of Victoria's innings as they were eventually bowled out for 263 in the 49th over.
Nicole Goodwin was the best of the NSW bowlers, finishing with 2-36 while Sharon Millanta (2-47) and Lisa Sthalekar (2-42) also chipped in with multiple scalps.
WNCL Final Preview, 11 February 2011
The two dominant teams of women’s domestic cricket in 2010-11, The DEC VicSpirit and NSW Lend Lease Breakers, are set for the Women’s National Cricket League final at the Sydney Cricket Ground tomorrow.
After the Spirit took the chocolates by just four runs in a nail-biting Women’s Interstate Twenty20 Final last Saturday in front of a building crowd at Adelaide Oval and live on Fox Sports, the Breakers will be out for revenge this weekend and looking to continue their stranglehold on the WNCL title.
The hosts have made just one change to the line-up that played the Twenty20 final, but it’s a significant change as Ellyse Perry returns, adding some extra pace to the bowling attack and some lusty lower-order batting. Claire Koski is the unlucky player to be omitted.
Meanwhile, a confident Spirit has also named just one change with quick bowler Julie Hunter replacing Kathleen Hempenstall for the trip to Sydney.
The Breakers are chasing a record equalling sixth consecutive WNCL title and it will be their experienced players that will most worry the Victorians with skipper Alex Blackwell, all-rounder Lisa Sthalekar, opener Leah Poulton and the returning Ellyse Perry all genuine match-winners.
Last weekend, it was Victoria’s young-gun batters that setup the win with Meg Lanning and Jess Cameron leading the charge and if the Spirit are to sink the Breakers again tomorrow they will need their batting line-up to fire.
Lanning again will be the key at the top or the order and along with Cameron, skipper Rachael Haynes and the experienced Sarah Elliot, those four will be crucial to setting a big total or chasing a large score.
The match will be live streamed and live scored on cricket.com.au, while you can also follow updates on Twitter via @_SouthernStars, @CricNSWBreakers or @DECspirit.
The match starts at 10am tomorrow at the SCG and entry is free.

Spirit back-to-back T20 champions, 05 February 2011, Sportal
Victoria are back-to-back women's Twenty20 champions after beating New South Wales by four runs on Saturday night.
In the curtain raiser to the Big Bash final at Adelaide Oval, Victoria batted first and posted an impressive 5-161 thanks largely to a cavalier 74 from teenager Meg Lanning.
The 18-year-old's innings came in just 56 balls and underpinned Victoria's innings.
Lanning's knock included seven fours and a six.
The right-hander received vital support from team-mates Jess Cameron (26 from 20 balls) and Sarah Elliott (23 from 23 balls).
The match went down to the final ball where NSW needed a six for victory. But last year's runners up could only manage two runs as they finished on 9-157.
Victoria looked like cruising to victory before Leah Poulton belted 76 from just 45 balls.
But Lanning again had a significant impact on the match when she took a diving catch at deep midwicket to dismiss the dangerous Poulton.
That dismissal in the 16th over triggered a collapse of 5-18 which ultimately left the Breakers' tail-enders with too much to do during the final overs.
It was the first of two finals the Breakers and Victoria will contest this summer. Next Saturday (February 12) they meet again in the 50-over competition final at the SCG. NSW are the defending champions in this competition having won the past five titles.
NSW Breakers want T20 revenge, 04 February 2011, Steve Orme, Sportal
NSW Breakers captain Alex Blackwell says her side is ready to avenge last season's Women's Twenty20 final loss to Victoria Spirit when the two sides collide in the 2010/11 decider at the Adelaide Oval.
The all conquering Breakers, who have won 12 of the last 14 Women's National Cricket League 50-over titles including five straight, suffered a rare defeat in last year's inaugural Twenty20 final.
But Blackwell is confident history won't repeat when her table-topping charges face their arch rivals on Saturday afternoon.
"We're a very good side, we've won lots of titles but we haven't won a Twenty20 title yet," Blackwell said.
"Victoria Spirit beat us last time around so we're really looking forward to getting out on the Adelaide Oval and doing a re-run of last year and hopefully going one better."
"We're really looking forward to getting out there and putting on a good show."
"The match is going to be live on Fox Sports which is excellent and I think we've got the team to win this year."
Blackwell, who scored an unbeaten 99 off 61 deliveries in her side's 43-run win over ACT Meteors last Saturday, is one of several Breakers players in rare form.
Veteran spinner Lisa Sthalekar claimed 5-11 off four overs in the same match against the Meteors while talented quick Ellyse Perry took 5-16 in the 50-over clash on Sunday.
But despite her confidence, Blackwell knows it would be a mistake to underestimate the Vic Spirit.
"They've got a very good Twenty20 side and obviously they're reigning champions, but we've had two very good wins against them in the round games," she said.
"I think Meg Lanning and Elyse Villani at the top of the order are very, very dangerous batters and their senior girls in Sarah Elliiott and Rachael Haynes coming through the middle are also key players."
"And Clea Smith with the new ball, she really leads their bowling attack, but we can't go easy on any of them."
"But I think we've good a very good side, a lot of depth in our batting and bowling and it's going to be a fantastic match."
ACT win thriller over Breakers, 31 January 2011, Paul Barbieri, Sportal
The ACT Meteors have produced a thrilling three-run victory over WNCL Twenty20 frontrunners New South Wales at Drummoyne Oval on Monday.
Having been thrashed by the Breakers the previous day by seven wickets in the 50-over competition, the Meteors knuckled down and posted 9-130 as they won the toss and batted first on Monday morning.
Chasing 131 to win, the Breakers still appeared in full control of the game, however, as they cruised to 3-100 at the start of the 13th over.
But Sarah Aley's dismissal sparked a remarkable collapse as the Breakers lost 7-27 in the final seven overs, the New South Wales women shipping three wickets in the final over as the Meteors produced a confidence-boosting victory.
Charlotte Anneveld proved the hero for the Meteors, equal top scoring for the ACT with 20 runs along with Aimee Harris.
But it was Anneveld's work with the ball that saw her side home, the bowler claiming all her wickets in a tense final over to bowl out the Breakers and finish with 3-28.
The Breakers had endured a terrible start to their run chase, losing Alyssa Healy for a duck with the first ball of the innings.
However Lisa Sthalekar (16) and Leah Poulton (44) took control and produced a 59-run second-wicket partnership that appeared to have given NSW the edge.
Even when they were dismissed, the runs continued to flow at a steady pace as Aley (17) and Claire Koski (29) combined for a 37-run fourth-wicket stand.
But Aley's dismissal saw the momentum turn towards the capital side, even though the Meteors did their best to throw away the win, missing two run-out chances in the final five overs.
The result sees NSW lose just their second Twenty20 match of the summer, but they still finish on top of the table and have secured a place in the final against Victoria.
Perry powers Breakers into final, 30 January 2011, Sportal
The New South Wales Breakers will be gunning for their sixth consecutive Women's National Cricket League 50-over title after confirming they will host the competition decider through a seven-wicket win over the ACT Meteors on Sunday.
Powered by a record-breaking, five-wicket haul from young star Ellyse Perry, the Breakers bowled out the Meteors for just 103 in the 40th over at Drummoyne Oval.
They then went on with the job, overhauling that target for the loss of just three wickets with almost 25 overs to spare, earning a bonus-point win.
Needing victory in order to qualify for and host the final, the Meteors have now finished the season in third on the WNCL standings, meaning the unbeaten Breakers (27 points) will host Victoria (22 points) in the February 12 decider.
The result also sees the Breakers qualify for their 15th consecutive 50-over final, the NSW women having won their last five on the trot, with the most recent triumph also coming against the Victorian Spirit.
The ease of their win had plenty to do with a spectacular bowling performance from pacewoman Perry, who ripped through the ACT's top order, helping reduce them to just 5-16 in the 10th over.
Earning the Player of the Match title, Perry finished with 5-11 from nine overs, her performance not only being a career best effort but also being the best bowling figures by a NSW player in the WNCL 50 over competition, overtaking Sarah Andrews' previous mark of 5-16.
Although plenty of batswomen were losing their wickets around her, ACT captain Kris Britt provided some resistance, making a stubborn 32 from 81 deliveries.
Britt was the seventh wicket to fall with the score on 70, but just when it looked like the Meteors would fold quickly, Englishwomen Georgia Elwiss and Lynsey Askew dug in for a 24 run partnership which saw the ACT pass 100.
The Breakers suffered an early hiccup in their chase, losing Alex Blackwell and Alyssa Healy before lunch and Lisa Sthalekar immediately after the break.
But an unbeaten 74-run fourth-wicket stand between Leah Poulton (43 from 77) and Sarah Coyte (35 from 39) saw them home in the 26th over.
The Breakers and ACT will play one more Twenty20 match on Monday at Drummoyne Oval, starting at 10am.
Spirit crush Scorpions, 30 January 2011, Sportal
Victoria have leapfrogged South Australia into second place on the Women's Twenty20 ladder after cruising to an emphatic nine-wicket victory at Junction Oval on Sunday.
Chasing a modest 113 for victory after doing a superb job restricting the Scorpions in their innings, the Spirit were never troubled as they chased down the total with more than six overs to spare.
Spirit openers Meg Lanning (59 not out) and Elyse Villani (44) were in scintillating form as they put on a century partnership, with the latter dismissed just three runs from the winning target.
Lanning was particularly brutal on the Scorpion bowlers, smashing nine fours and one six in a whirlwind 38-ball knock.
Earlier, the visitors won the toss and elected to bat but could never get going as the limped to 5-112 from their 20 overs.
Karen Rolton top scored for the Scorpions with a composed 40 off 41 deliveries.
Rolton, 36, who announced after the match she was retiring after a stellar career for Australia and the Scorpions, was ably supported by Lauren Ebsary who scored 23.
Clea Smith was the pick of the Spirit bowlers, finishing with 3-20 from her four overs, while Sarah Elliott (1-22) and Briana Binch (1-19) were the other wicket takers.
Blackwell brilliant for Breakers, 29 January 2011, Steve Orme, Sportal
Inspired performances from skipper Alex Blackwell and Lisa Sthalekar have helped the NSW Breakers to a comfortable 43-run victory over the ACT Meteors in the Women's Twenty20 clash at ANZ Stadium.
Having won the toss and elected to bat under sunny skies, Blackwell blasted an unbeaten 99 off 61 deliveries to guide the home side to an imposing 6-162 off their 20 overs.
Sthalekar finished the job with an equally impressive display with the ball, ripping through the visitors' top-order on the way to spectacular figures of 5-11 off four overs
Laura Wright (36 off 36) and Charlotte Anneveld (29 off 22) were the pick of the Meteors' batters as the visitors struggled to 9-119.
Earlier, a dot ball off the second-last delivery of the innings denied Blackwell what would have been the first-ever century in the two-year history of the competition.
Her blistering knock consisted of 12 boundaries and a six off the final ball of the Breakers' innings.
Sarah Coyte (40 off 34) was the only other Breakers batter to reach double figures, while Georgia Elwiss (3-14) starred with the ball for the visitors.
Blackwell said of her historic knock: "I never even contemplated getting 100 in a game like this before so it was just an opportunity that was there."
"I think it was probably a very good day for me so I'm not too disappointed but hopefully there's another opportunity where I can hit one less dot ball."
The Breakers will face the winner of Sunday's clash between Victoria and South Australia in the final at Adelaide Oval next Saturday.
Vics have spirited win over SA, 29 January 2011, Sportal
Half-centuries from Sarah Elliott and Rachael Haynes have led Vic Spirit to a six-wicket win over South Australia in their Women’s National Cricket League match at the Junction Oval.
A fourth-wicket, 129-run partnership from the pair saw the Victorians surpass the Scorpions total of 191 in the 32nd over.
Elliott finished the match unbeaten on 61 from 78 balls, while captain Haynes led from the front with 63 (72 balls) before being dismissed lbw by Cara Fiebig.
Earlier, South Australia won the toss and elected to bat and good knocks from Julie Woerner (30), Angela Moritz (40) set the Scorpions up well.
A quickfire 44 from 45 balls by Lauren Ebsary and 31 runs from Karen Rolton saw the Scorpions reach a respectable total of 7-191 from their 50 overs.
Elliott also starred with the ball for the Vics, taking 2-38 from her 10 overs while Briana Binch also took two wickets.
But the Scorpions were not as economical with the ball, as they let through 22 extras, including 14 wides, to help make Spirit’s chase a little easier.
Fiebig did her best to stop Victoria’s fast scoring with 3-34 from seven overs, but it wasn’t enough as the Spirit reached 193 with 17 overs remaining and six wickets in hand.
Roar douse Fire, 29 January 2011, Sportal
Tasmania have picked up just their second win of the season, cruising to a six-wicket win over Queensland in their Twenty20 clash at Bellerive Oval on Saturday.
An unbeaten half-century by opener Emma Thompson (56) was the catalyst for the Roar, Who chased down the visitors' total of 6-110 with 13 balls to spare.
Thompson played the perfect innings for the home side, mixing composure with raw power as she hit six boundaries in her 51-ball knock.
The Roar's run chase started poorly as they lost two early wickets to be languishing at 2-9.
But Erin Burns (28) gave Thompson strong support before Corrine Hall (16 not out) helped get the home side over the line.
Hayley Pattison was the best of the Queensland bowlers, finishing with 2-17.
Earlier, the fire won the toss and elected to bat but soon found themselves under the pump with opener Lyndall Daley out for a duck off the third ball of the innings.
Beth Mooney (31) ensured the visitors total got above 100, while Jess Jonassen (25) and Jodie Fields (26) also chipped in with valuable runs.
Linsey Da Costa was the pick of the Roar bowlers with a sensational 1-13 off her four overs.
Veronica Pyke, Burns, Katelyn Fryett and Hall were the other wicket takers.
Despite the win the Roar remain on the bottom of the Twenty20 ladder but are now just one point behind the Fire.
Fire silence the Roar, 28 January 2011, Sportal
An unbeaten 97 from Jess Jonassen has seen the Queensland Fire cruise to a seven-wicket victory over the Tasmanian Roar in the 50-over Women's National Cricket League clash at Bellerive Oval on Friday afternoon.
Having bowled the Roar out for 178 in 46.5 overs, the Fire overcame a slow start to their run chase before comfortably overtaking the total, finishing 3-180 from just 38.2 overs as Jonassen assaulted the hosts' bowlers, thrashing her 97 from just 99 deliveries.
Jonassen enjoyed a life on eight, dropped by Tassie wicketkeeper Kylie Jones off a difficult chance when a bottom edge slipped through Jones' fingers and went away to the fence for four.
The batswoman was also dropped in the 34th over from a quickfire caught-and-bowled chance to Katie-Jane Hartshorn.
But even if she had been dismissed, the damage had already been done as Queensland were 3-148 at the time and well on their way to victory.
Jonassen thrashed 11 boundaries and a six and was well assisted by Fire opener Lyndall Daley, who compiled a well-crafted 50 from 71 balls.
The early stages of Queensland's innings certainly lacked fire however, as the Tasmanians restricted them to 1-13 from the first six overs, Fire opener Fran Whittaker running herself out in the fifth over after a mix-up with Daley.
But, while Jonassen took a few overs to get her eye in, she and Daley soon hit their straps adding 92 runs before Hartshorn bowled Daley with the score on 104.
Hartshorn was soon on a hat-trick after she had Fire skipper Jodie Fields trapped in front from the very next delivery, but Danielle Hollis (24) wasn't tempted by a hat-trick ball that was outside off-stump, as she and Jonassen completed the run chase.
Hartshorn, though, finished the innings as Tasmania's only wicket taker, claiming 2-22 from six overs.
Earlier in the day, Emma Thompson and captain Veronica Pyke both top scored for the hosts with 34 apiece as the Fire bowled with discipline to dismiss the Tasmanians for just 178.
The locals were in trouble at 7-100 but a 67-run stand between Pyke and Belinda Page (30) gave the Roar some hope of victory.
Hayley Pattison took 3-40 from her allotted 10 overs, while Jemma Barsby was more economical, claiming 2-22 from her full spell.
Spirit soar over Scorpions, 28 January 2011, Gregor Mactaggart at the MCG, Sportal
Victoria Spirit has kept their hopes of making the Women's Twenty20 Final alive with an 86-run victory over South Australia Scorpions at the MCG on Friday.
As New South Wales were already assured of a spot in the decider, the clash between the second-placed Scorpions and third-placed Spirit was a pivotal one.
A Scorpions' victory would have meant season over for Victoria, but the Spirit prevented that with easily their best performance of the year.
The Spirit laid a winning platform with the bat, posting an impressive 5-149 from their allotted 20 overs.
But the Victorian batters, in particular teenage opener Meg Lanning and No.3 Jess Cameron, enjoyed a fair share of good fortune thanks to the profligate Scorpions' fielders.
Lanning rode her luck as she was dropped three times, but continued her fine summer by top-scoring for the Spirit with 60 from 44 balls.
The right-hander's third Twenty20 domestic half-century was highlighted by five boundaries and proved the dominant feature of a valuable 95-run second-wicket stand with Cameron.
Cameron was dropped twice during her knock of 40 off 32 balls before falling lbw to off-spinner Cara Fiebig for 40.
Fiebig, who was a late introduction into the South Australian attack, proved the best of the Scorpions bowlers, taking 2-20 from her four-over spell.
But even she couldn't stem the runs as Sarah Elliott, fresh from playing an important role in Australia's Ashes triumph, gave the Spirit innings a late thrust thanks to a polished 22 not out from 18 deliveries.
Elliott then made the early strides with the ball, taking the key wicket of Scorpions and Australian opener Shelley Nitschke (1) in the first over.
Nitschke's dismissal triggered a stunning collapse by the Scorpions who were soon 4-13 with Julie Woerner (1), Lauren Ebsary (0) and Fiebig (0) all back in the pavilion.
Experienced campaigner Karen Rolton fought hard in a valiant attempt to dig South Australia out of trouble, but found little support as Clea Smith ripped the heart out of the Scorpions middle and lower orders.
Smith bowled with good pace and line during her spell of 3-16 that captured the wickets of Angela Moritz (15), Alicia Dean and Neisha Iles as the Scorpions slumped to 9-45.
Victoria was only stopped in its bid to set a new record winning margin in women’s Twenty20 cricket by a stubborn 18-run final stand featuring Megan Schutt and Rolton.
Rolton looked set to carry her bat, but went down swinging, holing out to Briana Binch off leg-spinner Kristen Beams for 33, contributing more than half of the Scorpions' meagre total of 63.
In addition to Smith's three wickets, the Spirit were also well-served by Elliott (2-8), Beams (2-12) and Kath Hempenstall (2-17).
The Spirit and Scorpions meet again in the last regular season T20 clash at the Junction Oval on Sunday, with the winner advancing to the Final.
Fire cruise to victory, 27 January 2011, Sportal
The Queensland Fire have cruised to a comfortable nine-wicket win in their Twenty20 match against the Tasmanian Roar at Bellerive Oval on Thursday evening.
After the hosts struggled to 7-123 from their 20 overs, the Roar were never troubled as they lost just one wicket on their way to overhauling the total with over two overs to spare.
Openers Lyndall Daley and Beth Mooney put on 66 for the first wicket before Daley picked out Katie-Jane Hartshorn at point off the bowling of Corrine Hall.
Daley crunched four fours on her way to a well-made 40 off just 33 balls.
Jess Jonassen joined Mooney at the crease and wasted no time getting amongst the runs as she plundered five boundaries and a monster six in her 38 from 27 balls.
Mooney also finished unbeaten with a more measured 42 from 46 balls.
Earlier, a superb bowling spell from Hayley Pattison helped the Fire restrict the Roar to a modest total.
Pattison removed the dangerous Linsey Da Costa (26), Julia Price (31) and Carly Ryan (0) in a devastating two-over spell that yielded 3-9.
Hall made a quickfire 21 off 11, but it was never going to be enough as the hosts lost wickets at regular intervals throughout their innings.
Jemma Barsby chimed in for two wickets, while Jonassen and Selena Tainton picked up a wicket each.

Roar pick up first win, 15 January 2011, Sportal
Tasmania have picked up their first T20 win in the summer by defeating Western Australia by seven runs at the WACA on Saturday.
A 56-run opening stand between Emma Thompson and Belinda Page laid the platform for the Roar to reach 8-124 from their 20 overs.
The hosts looked on track to chase down the total but some superb bowling and fielding from the visitors left Fury seven runs short with two wickets in hand.
WA opener Lauren Stammers gave her side the ideal start with a magnificent 37 off 43 balls, but she failed to build any meaningful partnership as the Fury lost wickets at regular intervals.
Avril Fahey came in at second drop and looked like steering the Fury past the Roar as they required 39 off the final five overs.
But in search of quick runs she was involved in a run out with Nicole Bolton (13) before she was clean bowled by Katie-Jane Hartshorn having made 24 from as many balls.
Needing 14 off the final over, Mel Holmes (eight) and captain Peta Merrilees (one) were run out off consecutive balls before Renee Chappell was caught off the final ball of the match.
Hartshorn was the pick of the Roar bowlers with two wickets, while Veronica Pyke, Corrine Hall and Emma Thompson all chimed in for one.
Earlier, Thompson blasted 31 off 35 balls to give the Roar the ideal start to their innings. Page made a quickfire 29 in a strong opening stand, but when they were dismissed by Chappell the scoring rate began to slow down.
Some late hitting from Hall (14) and Carly Ryan (10) got Tasmania to 124, which proved to be enough.
Chappell claimed three wickets for the Fury, while Pulford and Jessica Moyes grabbed one each.
Fury edge out Roar, 14 January 2011, Sportal
The Western Fury have secured a tight three-wicket win over the Tasmanian Roar in the Women's National Cricket League match at Floreat Park Oval in Perth on Friday.
After the visitors were bowled out for 188 after winning the toss and electing to bat, the Fury overcame the loss of three early wickets to get to the winning target with less than three overs to spare.
All rounder Mel Holmes was the star for the home side, snaring two wickets with the ball before contributing 39 not out with the bat to guide the Fury to victory.
Holmes came to the crease with the match evenly poised with her side at 6-101 and first combined with Avril Fahey (50) before Renee Chappell (17 no) helped complete the job.
Things looked perilous for the Fury early on in their chase as Katelyn Fryett (3-44) ripped through the home side's top order to leave them reeling at 3-30.
But Fahey helped steady the ship on the way to a well-made half century before Holmes ensured a valuable win that moves the Fury to just one point behind third-placed Vic Spirit.
Earlier a whirlwind 85 from just 69 balls from Erin Burns helped the Roar post a competitive 188.
Burns smashed eight fours and one six in her sensational knock, which included a valuable 50-run ninth wicket stand with Fryett to help get the visitors to their total.
Ashleigh Endersbee was the best of the Fury bowlers with 3-21 from her eight overs while Chappell (2-22) and Holmes (2-16) were just as impressive.
Tasmania remain on the bottom of the WNCL ladder, without a win in five matches.
Fury too good for Roar, 13 January 2011, Sportal
An all-round team performance has seen Western Fury defeat Tasmania Roar by 10 runs in their National Women's Twenty20 clash at the WACA Ground in Perth.
After winning the toss and electing to bat the Fury made 8-113 from their 20 overs.
Nicole Bolton, opening the batting with Jenny Wallace (6), made 23 from 25 balls, including one boundary, to get the innings off on a good foot for the Western Australians.
Batter No.3 Lauren Stammers made a valuable 12 runs before being bowled by Katie-Jane Hartshorn, bringing Peta Merrilees to the crease.
Merrilees was soon back in the dressing room without making a run - her wicket the first of four run-outs by the Tasmanians who were on target in the field.
A quickfire 25 off 20 balls from middle-order bat Avril Fahey kicked the score along and her 49-run partnership with Rachael Giggins was key to the to the Fury's respectable total.
Hartshorn was the best of the Roar bowlers with 2-16 from her four overs.
The Roar innings did not get off to the best start with opener Belinda Page bowled for a duck by Gemma Triscari with the score on just five.
Fellow opener Emma Thompson held her end up with 40 from 48 balls, including three boundaries, before being bowled by Renee Chappell.
Julia Price added 19 to the score and Lauren Hepburn a late-order 12, but it was not enough as the Roar ran out of balls, finishing their 20 over on 8-103, just 10 runs short.
The Fury shared the wickets around with Triscari, Giggins and Chappell all snaring two scalps each.

Rain abandons T20 clash, 9 January 2011, Sportal
Constant rain has forced the abandonment of the Women's Twenty20 clash between the Queensland Fire and Vic Spirit at Allan Border Field on Sunday.
After persistent showers forced Saturday's WNCL match to be scrapped, the rain stuck around meaning no play was possible again.
The no result - the Spirits third this season - means they remain in third place on the ladder behind leaders NSW and South Australia.
Queensland remains second from bottom on the table, still searching for their first win.
Rain washes out match, 8 January 2011, Sportal
Persistent rain resulted in the WNCL match between Queensland Fire and Vic Spirit being abandoned before a ball was bowled.
The match, scheduled for play at Allan Border Field in Brisbane, never seriously looked like starting.
When the teams arrived the outfield was still quite wet and while waiting for it to dry, the heavens opened yet again in the Queensland capital, resulting in the officials deciding no play was possible.

Breakers hold off Scorpions, 6 January 2011, Sportal
New South Wales have secured an exciting 14-run win over South Australia in their women's national Twenty20 clash at Gliderol Stadium in Adelaide.
Having made a formidable total of 8-120 from their allotted overs, the Breakers withstood a spirited late charge from Scorpions pair Alicia Dean and Angela Moritz to come away with the points.
Earlier, NSW was well-served by opener Claire Koski and captain Sarah Aley, who played innings of contrasting natures.
Koski provided the backbone to the Breakers innings with a patient 27 off 47 deliveries, featuring a lone boundary.
Aley, on the other hand, was a skipper on a mission, smashing two boundaries and a striking six during an explosive nine-ball 20.
The pair shared a 28-run stand, NSW's biggest, and provided a platform built upon by middle-order batters Hannah Trollip (15) and Kara Sutherland (15 not out).
Three South Australian bowlers - Cara Fiebig (2-17), Karen Rolton (2-21) and Neisha Iles (2-23) were among the wicket-takers.
The Scorpions reply suffered an early blow when Rolton fell for two, but Julie Woerner and captain Lauren Ebsary ensured the damage was limited, putting on an impressive 52-run stand.
Ebsary (32 off 33) fell at 68, but it was the wicket of Woerner, bowled by Alison Parkin for 33, which triggered a collapse.
South Australia slumped from 2-75 to 6-80 before Dean and Moritz provided a late rally with an unbroken 26-run stand from just 19 balls, but it proved in vain as the Breakers held on.
Leg-spinner Angela Reakes (2-7) and Parkin (2-20) were NSW's best bowlers.
Breakers return to WNCL top, 5 January 2011, Sportal
New South Wales moved back to the top of the WNCL 50-over competition with a five-wicket win over South Australia at the Adelaide Oval on Wednesday.
Chasing South Australia's total of 8-192, the Breakers reached the victory target with 33 balls to spare.
The visitors exacted revenge on the Scorpions, who on Tuesday inflicted NSW's first Twenty20 loss of the season in a curtain-raiser to the KFC Big Bash.
Re-called veteran Michelle Goszko (32 not out from 25 balls) and rookie opener Kath Koschel (18 from 26) played starring roles.
After winning the toss and batting, Angela Moritz (53 from 89) and Lauren Ebsary (46 from 43), boosted the fifth-placed Scorpions to a defendable total.
Nicole Goodwin (2-28), Nicola Carey (2-32), Sharon Millanta (1-35) and Angela Reakes (1-33) did the damage for NSW.
In reply, Breakers openers Kate Waetford and Kath Koschel laid an excellent platform for the chase with a 79-run opening stand. Waetford was the first wicket to fall, lbw for 36, while Koschel went on to make 57 in just her second match for NSW.
South Australia were back in the game when the Breakers stumbled to 5-146 after Claire Koski (3) came and went cheaply and Sarah Aley (21) and Hannah Trollip (18).
Fast bowler Tamara Clapton was the Scorpions' best bowler, picking 2-35 from seven overs.
However NSW wasn't going let this match get away, with Goszko and Carey combining for an unbeaten 50-run stand to seal the win.
"The feeling in the team right now is fantastic. We learned a lot from yesterday's loss and today's effort was 10 times better. We weren't going to let another close game get away and I'm thrilled that the new girls in the side got to sing the team song," said Goszko.
"I wasn't nervous when I was batting. When Sarah Aley got out I had to make sure that I batted through to the end of the innings, and fortunately they bowled me some bad balls which I was able to put away."
Goszko admitted she was thrilled to be back playing for NSW with so many young players.
"I love being back. This is a great opportunity for me to play with girls who are going to be playing for NSW for a long time. Some will go on to represent Australia and I'll get to look back and say that I played with them."
NSW are one point clear of the ACT, who they will play in the final round at the end of the month.
Scorpions hand NSW first loss, 4 January 2011, Sportal
South Australia have inflicted New South Wales' first loss of the Women's Twenty20 season with an eight-wicket victory at Adelaide Oval on Tuesday evening.
The win gives the Scorpions a share of top spot (with NSW) on the Twenty20 ladder.
The Breakers, batting first after winning the toss, posted 6-109 after 20 overs, but it was no match for the hosts as they cruised to a comfortable win with two overs to spare.
NSW went into the match, a curtain raiser to the men's Big Bash fixture, without seven of their regular players, all of whom are currently on duty with the Australian team.
The Breakers lost a string of early wickets and at 5-53 were in a world of trouble.
However a 56-run, sixth-wicket stand, between Nicola Carey and Kath Koschel helped the Breakers to a competitive total.
Carey was outstanding on debut, hitting 34 runs from 27 balls, including five boundaries. Koschel was a rock as the wickets fell early around her. Batting at three, she came to the crease in the first over and compiled a patient 32 not out, providing excellent support for Carey at the death.
In reply, South Australia took control through former Australian captain Karen Rolton. After a slow start, she clubbed 48 from 53 balls, with 40 of her runs coming in boundaries.
Rolton eventually fell with the score on 89, but the Scorpions were already in the box seat and were guided home by Lauren Ebsary (38 not out).
"We batted poorly but and didn't score enough runs. We tried hard in the field but in the end didn't do enough to come away with the win," admitted Breakers coach Neil McDonald.
"But today was a great experience for a young side in front of a decent-sized crowd. The effort was definitely there, but the challenge now is for the players to execute our plans better than we did today."

Farrell's 3-8 douses Fire, 12 December 2010, Gregor Mactaggart, Sportal
An inspired opening spell from pace spearhead Rene Farrell helped Western Fury complete a women's cricket clean sweep of Queensland Fire at Floreat Oval on Sunday afternoon.
Farrell ripped the heart out of the Fire's top-order on her way to 3-8 from four lively overs, a spell that helped the home side to a five-wicket Twenty20 win.
The right-arm quick bowled opener Lyndall Daley for a second ball duck, then sent the dangerous Jessica Jonassen (1) and Fran Whittaker (12) back to the change-rooms with Queensland reeling at 3-17.
But the news got worse for the visitors, who fell to 7-30 thanks to a disastrous run out and two quick wickets from the Fury's New Zealand import Kate Pulford.
Beth Mooney and Kathryn Jenkin were left to undertake a recovery mission and their unbeaten 61-run stand at least gave Queensland a target to bowl at.
Mooney hit a dazzling run-a-ball 42 not out, including two sixes, while Jenkin (19 not out) proved a worthy ally.
Fury rarely looked troubled in reply, chasing down the moderate target in 17.2 overs.
Fresh from her half-century a day earlier, No.3 Lauren Stammers top-scored for WA with a polished 38 from 37 deliveries, headlined by five boundaries, while opener Jenny Wallace (18) and wise hand Avril Fahey (13) helped Fury home.
All-rounder Jonassen led the Queensland attack, taking 2-13 off her four overs.
Spirit complete Roar sweep, 12 December 2010, Sportal
The Victoria Spirit have completed a three-day sweep of the Tasmania Roar at Bellerive Oval, thrashing the hosts by 81 runs in their twenty20 clash to keep their hopes of defending their title alive.
After going down in both their matches against the New South Wales Breakers in mid-November and then having the bye late last month, the Spirit needed to respond in order to stay in touch with the leading teams.
And respond they have, following Friday's nine-wicket win with another impressive display as Jess Cameron set the Spirit on their way to 3-175 from their 20 overs and then Annie Maloney (3-11 from four overs) and Clea Smith (3-21 from four) helped restrict the Roar to 8-94 in reply.
Cameron and fellow opener Meg Lanning put on 78 for the first wicket before the Roar finally managed to separate them when Emma Thompson (1-16 from two overs) bowled Lanning for 32 from 28 deliveries with the first ball of the 10th over.
The wicket didn't slow the Victorian momentum though with Sarah Elliott joining Cameron as the pair added another 31 from 30 balls, Cameron finally falling to Lauren Onojaife (1-32 from four) but not before smashing six fours and a six during her 41-delivery stay.
Elliott and Rachael Haynes lashed 52 runs for the third wicket from just 27 balls, Haynes crashing a couple of fours and two sixes in a 12-ball stay that reaped 31 before she was stumped off Linsey Da Costa (1-34 from four) but Elliott finished with 39 from 36 balls and Elyse Villani eight from four.
Tasmania made an encouraging start, racing to 20 late in the third over but when Erin Burns (10) became Smith's first victim it triggered a collapse of 6-25, Maloney getting involved to help rip the heart out of the innings.
Briana Binch (1-15 from four) also played her part as Julia Price (4), Da Costa (4), Carly Ryan (2), Thompson (18) and Onojaife (0) all came and went, with Lauren Hepburn's unbeaten 26 from 40 balls all that prevented the Roar being routed.
Scorpions too good for Meteors, 12 December 2010, Sportal
A strong all-round performance from Karen Rolton has helped the SA Scorpions to a convincing 10-wicket win over the ACT Meteors in Adelaide on Sunday.
After winning the toss and electing to bat the Meteors struggled to 8-90 from their allotted 20 overs, with Rolton (2-12) the pick of the bowlers for the hosts.
The veteran did even more damage with the bat, blasting an unbeaten 50 off 52 deliveries to steer the Scorpions to victory alongside Shelley Nitschke (33 off 53) who also finished the match unbeaten.
Rolton, who struck four boundaries for the day, reached her half century with a single off the final ball of the match as the home side cruised to 0-91 off 17.3 overs.
Earlier, Sara Hungerford (31 off 34 balls) top scored for the visitors while Asha Smith (19 off 19) and Laura Wright (13 off 22) were the only other batters to reach double figures for the Meteors.
The Meteors' innings started disastrously when Rebecca McRae was run out for five before Rolton removed Smith and Kris Britt (three) to leave the visitors reeling at 3-28.
Hungerford and Rhiannon Dick produced a promising 33-run fifth-wicket stand before Hungerford was stumped by Alicia Dean off Cara Fiebig's (1-14) bowling.
Things went from bad to worse for the visitors when Dick and Charlotte Anneveld were both run-out in quick succession to set the hosts a modest victory target.
Fury cruise it home, 11 December 2010, Sportal
Half-centuries to Lauren Stammers and Peta Merrilees have helped the Western Australian Fury to a comfortable six-wicket victory over the Queensland Fire at Floreat Oval in their WNCL one-day clash on Saturday afternoon.
Stammers and WA skipper Merrilees put on a century partnership, helping the Fury chase down Queensland's initial total of 7-191 with 12 overs to spare, the hosts gaining a bonus point for their efforts.
Jenny Wallace also scored 32 for WA, the opener setting the tone for the confident run chase as she and Nicole Bolton plundered 10 runs from the very first over they faced.
Bolton was unfortunately run out for seven before Wallace was bowled by Hayley Pattison (1-19), leaving the Fury somewhat vulnerable at 2-77.
But when Merrilees (61 off 92 balls) and the aggressive Stammers (64 off 63) set about rebuilding the innings, their 100-run partnership ensured there was no slip up.
Stammers was also run-out with the score at 177, while Merrilees fell to a brilliant caught-and-bowled by Kathryn Jenkin (1-31) in the final over, but that wasn't enough to spoil the Fury's celebration.
Earlier in the day, Jess Jonassen top scored for the Fire with 57, although there were plenty of Queensland batswomen who made starts without going on and posting decent scores.
Indeed, the opening combination of Lyndall Daley (28) and Fran Whittaker (17) produced a very solid foundation to the innings over the first 11 overs.
But when both openers were stumped ahead of Leteysha Randall going for a duck, the Fire had lost 3-13 in less than four overs.
Jonassen and Beth Mooney (24) added 55 for the fourth wicket, but just as the pair looked set, WA skipper Merrilees decision to bring Renee Chappell into the attack paid dividends as she claimed Mooney's wicket.
Kirby Short added 31 as the Fire set a competitive total, but it wasn't enough as the Fury cruised to a comfortable win through their dominant batting.
Britt saves Meteors in Adelaide, 11 December 2010, Sportal
ACT Meteors have beaten SA Scorpions by three wickets in their WNCL match at Glandore Oval in Adelaide.
The win on Saturday has the Meteors breathing down the neck of top team NSW Breakers on the WNCL table.
South Australia won the toss and batted before posting a respectable 9-143 from their allotted 50 overs on an up-and-down wicket.
Their total could have been far less if not for Karen Rolton's 54 from 62 balls, which revived the home side following a slow start.
The all-rounder blasted two big sixes and four fours before she selflessly gave her wicket away in a bid for late-innings runs in the 50th over.
Opener Julie Woerner was the other major contributor, but her innings was sluggish and she only managed one boundary in her 38 from 95 balls.
Right-armer Charlotte Anneveld was the pick of the Scorpions' bowlers with figures of 4-24 from nine overs and left-arm spinner Rhiannon Dick snared 2-23 from 10 overs.
The Meteors' chase began disastrously when quick Stephanie Morrison found Laura Wright's leading edge in the first over, sending her back to the sheds for a duck.
ACT had lost two wickets without putting a run on the scoreboard in the second over when Asha Smith (zero) was caught at cover by Rhianna Peate off Megan Schutt.
But No.3 Kris Britt quickly set about repairing the damage on her way to 68 from 111 balls.
The right-hander was eventually out in the 39th over with the Meteors needing just seven for victory.
Tamara Clapton was South Australia's best bowler with 2-26 from 5.5 overs.
The Scorpions, fourth on the table, have the chance to bounce back when they take on NSW Breakers after Christmas.
The Meteors' next fixture is also against the Breakers, on January 30 in Sydney.
Haynes' ton powers Spirit, 11 December 2010, Sportal
Rachael Haynes led the way with a century as Victoria Spirit crushed Tasmania Roar by 225 runs in their WNCL match at Bellerive Oval on Saturday.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, the Spirit made a massive 8-344 from their 50 overs, before having the Roar all out for 119 in the 44th over.
Opener Haynes was superb with the bat, making 132 runs from 139 balls, including 13 fours and two sixes, before being caught by Emma Thompson off the bowling of Linsey Da Costa.
Fellow Victorian opener Meg Lanning carted the Tasmanians to all areas of the ground, making 80 from just 55 balls.
The pair made a stand of 122 for the first wicket before Lanning was run out by Julia Price.
Da Costa was the best of the Tassie bowlers, capturing 2-69 off her 10 overs.
Spirit's Renee Melton also contributed with the bat, making a quickfire 46 not out from 30 balls to help the Victorians to a commanding total at the end of their 50 overs.
And the Spirit stayed in control of the match, not allowing Tasmania a look-in during their innings.
Victoria's Annie Maloney carved her way through the Roar line-up, picking up the important wickets of opener Da Costa for 26, as well as No.3 Carly Ryan (14) on her way to her best-ever one-day figures of 4-26 from 10 overs.
She was ably supported by Briana Binch, who took 2-28 with the ball, as well as running out Roar opener Lauren Onojaife for just two runs.
Veronica Pyke was the best of the Tasmania bats, finishing with 33 from 71 balls.
Fury outplay winless Fire, 10 December 2010, Sportal
Western Fury have cruised to a nine-wicket Women's Twenty20 win against bottom side Queensland Fire at Floreat Park in Perth.
After choosing to bat first the visitors could only manage 6-107 from their 20 overs on Friday. In reply, the Fury mowed down the target with four overs to spare.
Fire openers Lyndall Daley and Fran Whittaker made a solid start and reached 66 before Daley was caught and bowled by off-spinner Jessica Moyes for 30 off 37 balls.
Whittaker (33 from 55) followed two balls later when she lofted a catch to long on.
That started the rot for Queensland as tight bowling from Renee Chappell (3-17) and Moyes (2-21) put the brakes on the Fire's innings.
Jess Jonassen chipped in with 17 but her middle-order team-mates never got going as Queensland stumbled to their mediocre total.
The Fire needed an early breakthrough, but it never came as Fury openers Jenny Wallace (50 from 41) and Nicole Bolton (48 not out from 46) dominated the attack.
The only wicket came in the 13th over when Kathryn Jenkin (1-14 from three overs) clean bowled Wallace, whose half-century included six fours and a massive six over square leg.
No.3 batter Lauren Stammers finished 10 not out.
It was the Fury's second win of the season while the Fire remain winless.
Scorpions tame Meteors, 10 December 2010, Sportal
South Australia have overcome a poor display with the bat to down the ACT Meteors by 14 runs in a low-scoring Women's Twenty20 clash at Glandore Oval on Friday.
The Scorpions looked well placed to push on to a big total when they reached 1-60 in the 11th over with Karen Rolton and Julie Woerner going along steadily after Shelley Nitschke (14) had fallen early but from there collapsed to 8-94 from their 20 overs as Lysney Askew grabbed 3-8 from three overs.
The visitors did threaten to run down the moderate total when they got to 1-40 after 7.1 overs but Kris Britt's dismissal at that score triggered a slump of 8-29 as only Asha Smith (29) and Sara Hungerford (19) reached double figures, Neisha Iles the destroyer with 3-16 from four overs.
The early dismissal of Nitschke did little to slow the hosts' momentum as Rolton and Woerner took to the ACT attack and they looked on target for a score of about 130 until Woerner fell for 23 to Rhiannon Dick (1-19 from four).
From there Rolton did her best to hold the innings together but wickets continued to fall steadily with Charlotte Anneveld (2-15 from three) chiming in with a couple of scalps of her own and Rolton was eventually the eighth batter out for 36.
But while the early loss of Leonie Coleman (3) to Megan Schutt (1-12 from 3) didn't seem to hurt the Meteors, Britt's loss with the score at 40 and Smith's to make it 3-53 were disasters as Iles found support from Rolton (1-9 from 4), Cara Fiebig (1-9 from 2.2) and Tamara Clapton (1-12 from 2).
Spirit crush Roar, 10 December 2010, Sportal
Victoria has cruised to a crushing nine-wicket win over Tasmania in their Women's T20 match at Hobart on Friday afternoon.
After winning the toss and electing to bowl, the Spirit did a superb job restricting the hosts to just 6-89 from their 20 overs on a tricky Bellerive Oval pitch.
The Roar made a shaky start with both openers Carly Ryan (3) and Emma Thompson both back in the pavilion with the score at just 19 with Spirit bowler Clea Smith the chief destroyer.
Smith was a handful for all the Roar batters, finishing with superb figures of 2-8 from her four overs.
While wickets were constantly falling around her, Julia Price did a superb job anchoring the Roar innings, finishing unbeaten on 35 from 46 deliveries.
Annie Maloney (1-9), Sarah Elliott (1-17) and Briana Binch (1-24) were the other wicket-takers for the visitors.
In reply, the Spirit had little trouble chasing down the target losing just one wicket as they reeled in the score in 15 overs.
Opener Meg Lanning smashed five boundaries as she finished unbeaten on 38, ably supported by No.3 Jess Cameron who was 33 not out.
Katelyn Fryett (1-13) was the only wicket-taker for the Roar, dismissing Spirit Elyse Villiani for 12 early in the run chase.
The victory keeps Victoria in fourth place on the Women's T20 ladder but they are closing in on the third-place ACT Meteors.

Breakers undefeated, 28 November 2010, Sportal
NSW Breakers remain undefeated in the Women's Twenty20 competition after thrashing Western Fury at Blacktown Olympic Park Oval, Sydney.
After winning the toss and batting, the Fury never got out of second gear and could only manage the below-par total of 7-99 from their 20 overs, which was easily mowed down by the Breakers.
Ellyse Perry was the pick of the NSW bowlers with 3-12 from four overs with the new ball. Nicole Goodwin took two wickets while Erin Osborne and Sharon Millanta took one each.
Only opener Jenny Wallace (16 from 24 balls) and all-rounder Rene Farrell (29 from 35 balls) were able to contribute anything of worth with the bat for the visitors.
Player of the match Alyssa Healy's 45 not out from 46 balls helped NSW reach the target with 21 balls to spare and seven wickets in hand.
Leah Poulton (25 from 30 balls) and Sarah Aley (19 from 17) also chipped in.
The Twenty20 win topped of a successful weekend for NSW after they easily won Saturday's 50-over match over the Fury.
The wins were extra sweet for the hosts given captain Alex Blackwell took no part in any of the matches due to illness while Lisa Sthalekar's role was hampered by a finger injury suffered in the field on Saturday.
Western Australia have won just two from eight matches and are losing touch with the table leaders.
Scorpions down Roar, 28 November 2010, Sportal
South Australia have beaten Tasmania by 36 runs in their Women's T20 match in Adelaide on Sunday.
Karen Roulton (58 not out) and Lauren Ebsary (53 not out) both hit half centuries to help the Scorpions post 2-123 from their 20 overs and then the bowlers did the job with Cara Fiebig claiming four wickets as the Roar were all out for 87.
SA looked to be in trouble early when captain Shelley Nitschke (0) and Julia Woerner (6) both fell to leave the hosts struggling at 2-15.
But Rolton and Ebsary steadied the ship and put on an unbeaten stand of 108 to set the Roar a tough target.
Captain Veronica Pyke (1-6) was the pick of the Tasmanian bowlers, while Linsey Da Costa (1-16) claimed the other wicket.
The visitors were also reduced to 2-15 but a fighting partnership from Julia Price (32) and Erin Burns (22) gave the Roar a chance until Fiebig entered the fray.
Having already ran out Carly Ryan (8) with some handy fielding, Fiebig removed the dangerous Price and then found herself on a hat-trick when Emma Thompson was stumped the next ball.
She missed the hat-trick, but picked up another two scalps in her next over as the Roar lost their final eight wickets for just 27 runs.
Nitschke claimed two of those, while Ebsary, Rolton and Megan Schutt each picked up one.
Scorpions edge out Roar, 27 November 2010, Sportal
South Australia have held on for a tight 22-run win over the Tasmania Roar in their WNCL match in Adelaide on Saturday.
After winning the toss and electing the bat, the Scorpions managed 7-222 from their 50 overs, thanks largely to a wonderful opening stand between Shelley Nitschke (63) and Julie Woerner (60).
The pair combined for 137 for the first wicket, smashing the Roar attack to all parts before Julia Price (2-17) got the breakthrough, trapping Nitschke in front.
The home side lost wickets at regular intervals after that first dismissal, eventually getting to 222 thanks to Cara Fiebig (24) and some lusty late hits from Neisha Iles.
Veronica Pyke (2-38), Lynsey Da Costa (1-37) and Erin Burns (1-40) were the other wicket takers for the Roar.
The visitors run chase started poorly with Da Costa (8) and Carly Ryan (1) dismissed cheaply to have them struggling at 2-24 early on.
But it brought Price to the crease and the 38-year-old produced a sensational innings to get the Roar's innings back on track.
Price, who was ably supported by Pyke (24) and Burns (22), smacked five boundaries as she belted an entertaining half century.
Price got to 61 before she was caught off the bowling of Fiebig to leave the visitors 7-171 and turning the match back in the Scorpions favour.
After a half-century of her own, Nitschke (3-27) cleaned up the tail, with Fiebig (2-19) and Megan Schutt (2-37) also making important contributions with the ball.
Breakers grind out win, 27 November 2010, Sportal
New South Wales have claimed a hard-fought four-wicket victory over the Western Fury in their WNCL match at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday.
After the Fury were bowled out for 157, the Breakers lost six wickets before getting to the target with more than 15 overs to spare.
Batting first, the Fury made a solid start, getting to 29 before opener Nicole Bolton was bowled by Ellyse Perry.
The wicket sparked a mini-collapse with the visitors losing 4-19 to be struggling at 4-48.
But a fifth-wicket stand of 69 between Lauren Stammers (39) and Kate Pulford (37) resurrected the innings, before another flurry of wickets saw the Fury dismissed for 157.
Sharon Millanta (3-26) was the best of the Breakers bowlers, with Perry (2-32) and Lisa Sthalekar (2-16) also chipping in with valuable wickets.
In reply, Breakers' openers Leah Poulton (30) and Alyssa Healy (20) gave the home side a strong start, getting to 44 in quick time before Healy was trapped in front by Pulford.
The Fury gave themselves some hope when Pulford (2-43), Rene Farrell (2-38) and Renee Chappell (2-37) all picked up vital breakthroughs to leave the Breakers at 4-84 with still plenty of work to do.
But a mature innings from Perry, who finished unbeaten on 31 off 51 deliveries, and a swashbuckling 28 from Sarah Aley guided the Breakers home to keep them in top spot on the WNCL ladder.
Meteors blitz Fire, 27 November 2010, Sportal
An unbeaten century from Asha Smith has helped the ACT Meteors to an impressive nine-wicket victory over the Queensland Fire in their Women's National Cricket League one-day clash on Saturday.
ACT skipper Kris Britt took the early initiative, her 5-22 from 10 overs helping reduce the Fire from a competitive 1-85 to 9-203 after their 50 overs at Manuka Oval on Saturday morning.
Having set a reachable target, the Fire were powerless to stop ACT's opening pair as Smith belted an unbeaten 100 off just 70 balls, while Laura Wright added 86 from just 65.
Although Wright was stumped off Jess Jonassen's (1-43) bowling 11 runs shy of making the target, Smith and Britt (two) easily took the Meteors to victory with an incredible 27.2 overs to spare.
Queensland will be wondering how it all went so wrong after Lyndall Daley (42) and Fran Whittaker (48) saw the Fire through to 85 without loss before Daley was trapped in front by Charlotte Anneveld (3-21).
Jonassen (five) and Leteysha Randall (zero) both then fell with the score on 99 and when Whittaker was dismissed six runs later, Queensland appeared in trouble.
A 64-run partnership for the ninth wicket between the unbeaten Kathryn Jenkin (26) and Jemma Barsby (37) added some respectability to the score, but it all proved for naught in the face of the ACT onslaught to come.
Scorpions sting Roar in T20, 26 November 2010, Sportal
A brilliant performance by South Australia with the ball and in the field has helped the Scorpions to a comfortable 80-run win over Tasmania in their Women's Twenty20 clash in Adelaide on Friday.
After posting 1-123 from their 20 overs thanks to 51 from Shelley Nitschke and an unbeaten 41 from Karen Rolton, the Scorpions had little trouble defending the total dismissing the Roar for just 43.
Six Roar batters were dismissed for ducks in a horror run chase, which included three run outs, while Lauren Ebsary was the pick of the bowlers finishing with 3-8 from her four overs.
Veronica Pyke was the only Tassie batter to provide any resistance, finishing unbeaten on 21 from just 28 balls after coming to the crease with her side at 6-17.
Nitschke, Rolton, Megan Schutt and Neisha Iles all finished with a wicket apiece for the Scorpions.
Earlier, Rolton and Nitschke put on 89 for the first wicket for the hosts before the latter was caught out off the bowling of Katie-Jane Hartshorn just after getting to her half-century.
Sthalekar fires Breakers, 26 November 2010, Sportal
An impressive performance with both bat and ball from New South Wales all-rounder Lisa Sthalekar has seen the Breakers defeat the Western Fury by 55 runs in their Women's Twenty20 clash at Blacktown Oval on Friday afternoon.
Sthalekar looked in superb touch as she blasted 53 from just 38 balls, her efforts combined with those of Leah Poulton (40 from 26), helping the Breakers to 5-158 from their 20 overs.
And, having dazzled with the bat, Sthalekar turned her attention to the ball as she claimed 3-15 from her allotted four overs, to ensure the Fury were restricted to just 8-103 in their innings.
The Breakers never really looked back after openers Poulton and Alyssa Healy (16) led from the front with a 56-run stand.
Poulton may have fallen just five runs later, but a 61-run partnership between Sthalekar and Sarah Coyte (17) ensured NSW posted a more-than competitive total, although Kate Burns did well for the Fury with 3-31.
The Fury never looked in the hunt, however, after Ellyse Perry (2-14) bowled Jenny Wallace for three.
Avril Fahey (25) and Lauren Stammers (19) tried hard to turn the tide but the Western Australians kept on losing wickets at regular intervals and never threatened to chase down their opponent's huge total.
Meteors douse Fire in T20, 26 November 2010, Sportal
An unbeaten 41 from Charlotte Anneveld has helped the ACT Meteors to a six-wicket victory over the Queensland Fire in the Women's Twenty20 clash at Manuka Oval on Friday afternoon.
The Fire were bowled out for just 87 in their innings, despite opening with a 47-run partnership between top scorer Lyndall Daley (33) and Fran Whittaker (15).
However, only one other Fire batswoman, Beth Mooney (17), broke double figures as the Meteors tore through the Queensland line-up, ACT's Lynsey Askew taking 3-20 from her four overs, as Anneveld and skipper Kris Britt chimed in with two apiece.
The Fire may have fallen for the dreaded 87 from 19.2 overs, but ACT's chase didn't get off to a good start, either, as Asha Smith (three) and Britt (two) fell early.
When Leonie Coleman lost her wicket for 10, the Meteors had slumped to 3-20.
But a 40-run stand between Anneveld and Sara Hungerford (24) steadied the ship and despite the loss of Hungerford to Jess Jonassen, who took 2-18 from her four overs, the Meteors powered on for a convincing win from 15.2 overs.

Scorpions win thriller over Fire, 14 November 2010, Sportal
South Australia have picked up a thrilling win over Queensland off the second last ball of their Twenty20 clash at the Gabba on Sunday.
Set 110 for victory after the hosts stumbled to 6-109 from their 20 overs, the Scorpions lost just three wickets but still required eight runs heading into the final over.
But they needn't have worried as Lauren Ebsary hit two boundaries off Courtney Hill to get her side over the line with a ball to spare.
Ebsary played a fantastic knock for the Scorpions, hitting four boundaries on her way to 51 not out from just 46 deliveries.
The 27-year-old came to the crease with her side struggling at 2-10 but combined for a 67-run stand with Shelley Nitschke (36) that turned the game in the visitors' favour.
Lynda Petherick was the best of the Fire bowlers, taking all three wickets for just 20 runs from her four overs.
Batting first, the home side lost wickets at regular intervals as they struggled with the accurate bowling of Nitschke (3-18 from four overs) and Megan Schutt (2-17 off four).
Fran Whittaker (32) and Leteysha Randall (24) were the pick of the Fire batters but they weren't given enough support to post a much bigger total.
The Scorpions have moved up to fourth place in the T20 competition with victory, while Queensland remain on the bottom of the ladder.
Fury hold off Meteors, 14 November 2010, Sportal
The Western Fury have recorded an exciting 14-run win over the ACT Meteors in their Twenty20 clash at Manuka Oval in Canberra on Sunday.
After being sent into bat with the hosts, the Fury got off to the best possible start with openers Jenny Wallace and Nicole Bolton putting on an opening stand of 97 on the way to an overall total of 4-146 from their 20 overs.
Bolton took a particular liking to the Meteors bowling, notching an impressive 57 from just 51 balls with four boundaries.
Wallace (44 from 48) and a quick-fire 21 from just 12 deliveries from Avril Fahey helped the visitors to their imposing total.
Charlotte Anneveld (2-24 from four overs) and Rhiannon Dick (1-18 from four) were the pick of the ACT bowlers but they couldn't prevent the Fury from setting a big target.
In reply the home side lost a couple of early wickets which made it difficult to keep up with the required run rate, eventually finishing at 5-132 from their allotted overs.
Anneveld (40 not out from 38 balls) and Kris Britt (25 from 24) were the best of the Meteors batters but simply just didn't get enough support to make a genuine crack at the total.
Renee Chappell (1-22 from four overs) was the best of the Fury bowlers but was ably supported by Rene Farrell (1-25 from four) and Gemma Triscari (1-26 from four).
The win was just the Fury's second of the season in the T20 comp while the Meteors remain in second place despite their defeat.
Breakers topple Spirit, 14 November 2010, Sportal
Alyssa Healy New South Wales have made it back-to-back Twenty20 wins over Victoria after defeating the reigning champions by eight wickets at the MCG on Sunday.
After notching a strong 35-run victory in their first T20 meeting on Friday, the Breakers made it a successful weekend against the Spirit with another dominant display, winning with 16 balls to spare.
The hosts won the toss and elected to bat but struggled to post a competitive total, finishing at 7-124 from their 20 overs.
The Spirit lost opener Elyse Villiani (8) with the score on just 9 but Meg Lanning and Jess Cameron then came together and took the NSW bowlers.
The pair combined and put on a breezy 61 runs and it looked like a healthy total was on the cards for the home side.
But Lanning's dismissed for 20 by Lisa Sthalekar sparked a collapse with the Spirit losing 6-46 as they stumbled to their final total.
Cameron was the pick of the batters for the hosts scoring 39 from just 33 balls, while Rachael Haynes posted a quick-fire 23.
The Breakers shared the wickets around with Sthalekar, Sarah Coyte, Erin Osborne and Sharon Millanta all picking up one scalp each.
The visitors had little trouble in the run chase thanks largely to a superb innings by opener Alyssa Healy, who finished unbeaten on 55 from 59 deliveries.
Healy anchored the innings brilliantly, hitting four boundaries in a chanceless innings.
The young wicket-keeper got good support from Alex Blackwell who scored 37 from just 27 balls, while Sthalekar finished unbeaten on 15.
Annie Maloney and Naomi Fullwood were the wicket takers for the Spirit.
Scorpions clinch hard-fought win, 13 November 2010, Sportal
South Australia have claimed a hard-fought victory over Queensland in their WNCL match at the Gabba on Saturday.
Chasing the Fire's 9-238, the Scorpions secured the four-wicket win with nine balls to spare.
Batting first, Queensland made a slow start after losing openers Lyndall Daley (13) and Fran Whittaker early but recovered through Jess Jonassen, who produced a steadying knock of 56.
She was joined in the middle order by Danielle Hollis, who hit 70 from 108 balls.
But when Daley was brilliantly caught and bowled by Tamara Clapton (1-23 from six overs) and Rhianna Peate (4-39 from eight overs) had Hollis caught behind the Scorpions were able to curtail any late-innings charge.
In reply, Scorpion opener Shelley Nitschke (36) and No.3 Cara Fiebig (55) combined for 69-run stand that ensured the run rate was always within South Australia's reach.
The Fire were back in the match when Hayley Pattison (1-15) removed Lauren Ebsary for 37 and Fiona McDonald was bowled by Jemma Barsby (1-43) for 12 inside the last 10 overs.
But all-rounder Karen Rolten answered the call with an important unbeaten knock of 53 from 61 balls that guided the visitors home.
Britt powers Meteors to big win, 13 November 2010, Sportal
ACT Meteors have recorded a 64-run win over Western Fury in the WNCL match on Saturday at Manuka Oval in Canberra.
After the Meteors won the toss and batted, a bludgeoning 145 from 126 balls from Kris Britt propelled the home side to the huge tally of 6-308 from their 50 overs.
Player-of-the-match Britt's innings was supported by 84 from Laura Wright in what was a 136-run top-order partnership that sapped the life out of WA's attack.
Rene Farrell (1-49 from 10 overs) and Kate Pulford (2-47 from 10) led the WA but they didn't get enough support as Britt and Wright continually found gaps in the field to pile on 23 boundaries between them.
In reply the Fury made 5-244 with opener Jenny Wallace topscoring with 90 from 122 balls.
Peta Merrilees (45 from 64) and Nicole Bolton (41 from 56) also contributed but it was never going to be enough for the visitors.
With the huge target in front of them, the Fury's innings was on track early when they reached 89 without loss.
But when Bolton was brilliantly run out by Leonie Coleman the required run rate ballooned out of control and they never recovered.
Charlotte Anneveld (2-35 from six overs) was the best of eight bowlers used in the ACT attack.
Spirit-Breakers washed out, 13 November 2010, Sportal
The Women's National Cricket League match between the Vic Spirit and NSW Breakers has been abandoned after persistent rain made it possible for only 19 overs to be bowled at the MCG on Saturday.
After being sent in to bat in overcast conditions in Melbourne, the Breakers got to 3-62 in 19 overs before the heavens opened.
The NSW openers made a strong start, getting to 44 with little trouble before Leah Poulton (22) was out caught from the bowling of Annie Maloney.
Fellow Breakers opener Alex Blackwell also got to 22 before she became Maloney's second victim two overs later.
Maloney was proving a handful on the bowler friendly wicket and picked up a third scalp soon after, trapping Alyssa Healy (3) in front to leave the Breakers struggling at 3-55.
Lisa Sthalekar (4 not out) and Sarah Coyte (5 not out) were setting about steadying the ship before rain struck.
Maloney was easily the pick of the Spirit bowler, finishing with 3-18 from five overs.
Scorpions douse the Fire, 12 November 2010, Luke Buttigieg, Sportal
South Australia have tamed Queensland by 65 runs in their Twenty20 clash at the Gabba on Friday afternoon.
The Scorpions batted first and smashed their way to an impressive 2-159 from their 20 overs, with the innings including 18 fours and a pair of sixes before the Fire never really threatened to run their total down, finishing with a disappointing 9-94.
Apart from the dismissal of Shelley Nitschke for 17 with the score on 39, SA dominated with the bat as No.3 Julie Woerner led the way with an unbeaten 51 from 38 balls that featured six fours and a six as Karen Rolton (41 from 39) and Lauren Ebsary (41 not out from 24 balls) also left their mark.
Woerner and Rolton added 52 for the second wicket and Woerner and Ebsary shared an unbroken third-wicket union of 68, while Jess Jonassen (1-28 from four overs) and Jemma Barsby (1-34 from four) captured the only wickets to fall.
Set on their heels, the Fire lost opener Leteysha Randall (one) early and quickly slumped to 3-26 before a steady procession of wickets put paid to any chance they had, Danielle Hollis top-scoring with 33 from 30 and Lyndall Daley (16) and Jonassen (12) also getting to double figures.
The Scorpions completed their dominance late on with a collapse of 4-10 in the closing stages as Rolton claimed 3-16 from her four overs, Nitschke picked up to take 2-10 from four and Ebsary (1-16), Neisha Iles (1-19) and Megan Schutt (1-20) all contributed with the ball.
The result gives the Scorpions two wins from their three games so far, having not played a fortnight ago, while the Fire slumped to their third heavy loss from as many games, having earlier been beaten by 69 and 81 runs by the New South Wales Breakers.
Breakers show up spirit, 12 November 2010, Luke Buttigieg, Sportal
New South Wales have claimed their maiden Twenty20 win over Victoria on Friday at the MCG, defeating the reigning champions by 35 runs.
The Breakers' total of 6-125 from their 20 overs looked well short, especially when the Spirit had knocked off more than a quarter of their target reaching 32 in the sixth over, but a collapse of 5-16 saw them eventually finish well short on 9-90 in reply.
Lisa Sthalekar was the standout with the bat for the visitors, finding the fence twice as she made 41 from 34 balls while Alex Blackwell contributed 28 and Sarah Coyte (20) added 46 for the fourth wicket with Sthalekar in the best partnership of the day.
But Leah Poulton (14) was the only other Breakers batter to reach double figures as Briana Binch captured 2-23 from four overs and Annie Maloney (1-18), Rachael Haynes (1-19) and Clea Smith (1-31) claimed one each.
The fine start by the Spirit thanks to Meg Lanning and Elyse Villani was cut short when Lanning was brilliantly run out by wicketkeeper Alyssa Healy and Erin Osborne then took over with the ball, decimating the top and middle orders with a match-winning haul of 4-13 from four miserly overs.
Smith would be the only other Victorian batter to bring up double figures as the hosts fell apart, with Sthalekar (1-15), Coyte (1-17) and Nicole Goodwin (1-7) picking up a wicket apiece and Emma Inglis run out for a duck courtesy of opening bowler Sharon Millanta.
The win was the Breakers' fifth from as many starts this campaign and first against their rivals since the states first clashed in the shortest form of the game in 2006-07 while the Spirit suffered their first defeat in the competition, although their first match was also washed out.
Meteors eclipse Fury, 12 November 2010, Luke Buttigieg, Sportal
The ACT Meteors have thrashed the WA Fury by nine wickets in their Twenty20 clash at Manuka Oval on Friday.
Having already claimed two wins from their four matches, with a third washed out in mid-October, the Meteors restricted the visitors to just 7-111 from their 20 overs thanks to Lynsey Askew's 3-24 from four overs and a haul of 2-19 from four overs from Kris Britt.
Asha Smith and Leonie Coleman then put the Fury bowlers to the sword in reply, sharing a 101-run partnership at the top of the order before Coleman fell for 42 from just 27 balls with only 11 runs required.
While Coleman struck five fours, Smith found the rope nine times en route to an unbeaten 55 from 46 balls, and Britt also chimed in with eight from just three deliveries as the ACT reached 1-116 with 47 balls to spare, Britt hitting a six to complete the victory.
While the Fury were forced to try eight different bowlers in an attempt to find a breakthrough, having been forced to replace Kate Pulford after just one ball, Jessica Moyes had the only success but still went for 1-13 from 1.1 overs.
Earlier, there was little sign of the collapse to come when Jenny Wallace (17) and Lauren Stammers (15) put on 32 for the first wicket. But when opening bowler Georgia Elwiss (1-19) sent Stammers on her way WA started to struggle.
From there wickets fell at regular intervals even though Pulford (18), Nicole Bolton (12), Peta Merrilees (14) and Angele Gray (21 not out) all reached double figures, with Askew tearing the heart out of the innings before Britt grabbed her two wickets and also effected a run out.

Meteors trounce Roar, 1 November 2010, Sportal
The ACT Meteors have capped off a dominant weekend in Tasmania, winning Monday's Twenty20 game against the Roar by 70-runs in Launceston.
After winning both the first T20 and Sunday's rain-reduced one-dayer, the Meteors completed the hat-trick in dominant fashion at the NTCA Ground.
The visitors won the toss and elected to bat and cruised to 37 before opener Leonie Coleman was bowled by Veronica Pyke for just 10.
But that just brought Kris Britt to the crease and together with Asha Smith the pair put on a brilliant display of batting that set up the win for the ACT.
The Roar had no answer to swashbuckling innings from Smith (89 off 59 balls) and Britt (70 off 44) who combined for a whirlwind stand of 134 as the visitors posted 3-173 from their 20 overs.
Tasmania's reply started in disastrous fashion as Carly Ryan was run out by Sally Moylan with the score on just eight.
The hosts struggled to get any meaningful partnerships going with Britt (2-22) and Aimee Harris (2-14) doing most of the damage with the ball.
Opener Lynsey Da Costa top scored for the Roar with 32 while Lauren Onojaife also showed some promise with 28.
But tight bowling by the Meteors meant the hosts couldn't keep up with the required run rate, eventually finishing a 6-103 from their 20 overs.
Meteors down Roar, 31 October 2010, Sportal
The ACT Meteors completed the Twenty20/one-day match double, winning their rain-affected game over the Tasmania Roar by 44 runs in Launceston on Sunday.
The Meteors conquered the home side in the Twenty20 on Saturday, before backing up in their one-day encounter on Sunday, which was reduced to a 37-over-a-side affair after rain stopped play after just one delivery.
The visitors got off to a slow start, slumping to 3-15 as left arm medium bowler Veronica Pyke claimed all three scalps in her first three overs.
Small partnerships littered wickets four to nine for the ACT before a breakthrough 56-run stand for the 10th-wicket lifted their total to 155 all out off their 37 overs, with Georgia Elwiss run out on the final delivery of the innings for a top score of 40 off 39 balls.
Sara Hungerford was next best with the bat on 32, while first drop Kris Britt registered a solid 26.
The Roar's chase got off to a horror start when Linsey Da Costa was dismissed for just four, leaving the hosts 1-6, but a steadying 32-run partnership for the second week put Tasmania back on target.
Number four bat Carly Ryan top scored for the home side on 22, and a lack of a big individual score was the downfall for the Roar, as they lost their final six wickets for 33 runs to be all out 111 after 32 overs.
Britt showed her talents were not limited to the bat when her spinners snared three wickets for just 11 runs in her four overs; the best of the bowlers.
Aimee Harris was next best of the Meteors bowlers with two scalps, alongside medium pacer Charlotte Anneveld with two.
Breakers breathing fire in T20, 31 October 2010, Sportal
NSW Breakers have surged to a crushing 81-run win over the Queensland Fire in their Women's Twenty/20 clash at Allan Border Field on Sunday.
The Breakers won the toss and elected to bat and opener Leah Poulton and Sarah Coyte led the way with half centuries as the visitors posted an imposing 3-177 from their 20 overs.
The Fire started their chase well but once they lost opener Leteysha Randall with the score on 33 wickets then fell regularly with the hosts eventually finishing on 8-96 from their allotted overs.
NSW had a shaky start losing opener Alyssa Healy for seven with the score on just 21 but it brought Poulton and Coyte together and they immediately put their side on the front foot.
Poulton was particularly devastating as she hit 10 fours and a six on her way to 75 from 55 balls.
She put on a match-winning 122-run stand with Coyte, who also batted superbly to score a whirlwind 55 from just 45 deliveries.
Some lusty late hitting from Claire Koski (18 from 10) helped pushed the Breakers total to 177.
It was always going to be a difficult task for the host to chase down the target and it proved just that as a number of the Fire's batters got starts but couldn't go on and post a big score.
Randall and fellow opener Lyndall Daley both scored 20, Danielle Hollis (17) and Selena Tainton (13) all started well but were undone by some tight Breakers bowling.
Lisa Sthalekar (2-12) and Coyte (2-21) were the best of the NSW bowlers, while Angela Reakes (1-7) and Kara Sutherland (1-11) also picked up wickets.
The Breakers had a successful weekend in Brisbane winning all three matches to move to the top of the Womens T20 competition.
Spirit pip Fury in T20, 31 October 2010, Sportal
The Victoria Spirit have defeated the Western Fury by 10 runs in a rain-reduced Women's T20 match at the Geelong Cricket Ground on Sunday.
Wet weather in Melbourne forced a long delay, with the match reduced to just five overs for each side.
After winning the toss and electing to bowl, the Fury could only restrict the hosts to 4-43 off their swift 30-ball innings.
With only five overs to bat there was no time for the DEC Spirit batters to get their eye in and openers Meg Lanning (8) and Elyse Villani (8) were both dismissed trying to get quick runs.
Renee Chappell was the best of the Fury bowlers snaring 2-5 off just one over but Sarah Elliott (11) and Rachael Haynes (10) scored well in the last couple of overs to set the visitors almost nine runs an over to win.
And they started well with 10 runs coming off the first over of their chase but then lost wickets at regular intervals to finish at 6-33 from their five overs.
Annie Maloney was the best with the ball for the DEC Spirit, taking 2-6 from her one over, while Briana Binch (1-4), Elliott (1-4) and Clea Smith (1-10) also picking up a scalp.
The victory caps a strong weekend for the DEC Spirit that won the opening match with the Fury on Friday, while Saturday's clash was washed out.
Breakers earn bonus point, 30 October 2010, Luke Sheehan, Sportal
NSW Breakers earned a bonus point in their three-wicket win over Queensland Fire in their Women's National Cricket League encounter at Allan Border Field on Saturday.
The Fire won the toss and elected to bat, and Beth Mooney anchored the hosts' innings with an unbeaten half-century batting at number six as the Queenslanders compiled 8-183 in their 50 overs.
NSW reached the target in their 31st over, not before losing quick wickets late which threatened to affect their chase of a bonus point.
The Fire got off to a horror start when opener Lyndall Daley was ran out for three to leave them at 1-8, before losing both Jess Jonassen and Leteysha Randall within the space of three runs to be limping at 3-35.
A 49-run fourth-wicket partnership was the catalyst to saving the Fire's inning, courtesy of Fran Whittaker and Danielle Hollis putting together some quality runs at the crease.
Right-arm off-spinner Lisa Sthalekar was the best of the bowlers for the visitors, snaring 2-25 off 10 overs, including the vital wicket of Whittaker.
The NSW side had little trouble chasing the target, with Alex Blackwell and Leah Poulton putting on 50 runs for the first wicket in an ominous sign of things to come.
Alyssa Healy came in at number three and top scored with 59 off just 49 balls, hitting four fours and two sixes, and put on 92 runs with Sthalekar for the third wicket to all but sew up the points for the visitors.
The Breakers lost four wickets late for the addition of just 12 runs from 3-170 to 7-182, but got over the line to claim the bonus point in their convincing win.
Spirit v Fury washed out, 30 October 2010, Luke Sheehan, Sportal
The clash between Vic Spirit and Western Fury was called a draw, after persistent rain ensured only 20 overs of play were seen at the Geelong Cricket Ground in their Women's National Cricket League one-day match on Saturday.
The Victorians batted first and were 4-97 when play was called off after 20.3 overs.
The Spirit would have been breathing a collective sigh of relief, as they were in trouble at 4-46, but had significantly steadied their innings with a 51-run partnership and were back in the game when rain struck.
Right-hand bat Meg Lanning smashed 38 off 34 balls in the fifth wicket partnership, including four boundaries, and was supported by Emma Inglis who hit 16 off 22.
For the Fury, Rene Farrell picked up figures of 2-36 off seven overs, while Kate Burns had the economical figures of 2-6 from her four overs.
Meteors thrash Roar by eight wickets, 30 October 2010, Luke Sheehan, Sportal
The ACT Meteors have thrashed the Tasmanian Roar by eight wickets in their Women's Twenty20 match at Launceston on Saturday.
The Meteors restricted the home side to 6-95 in the first innings, with right arm pacewoman Lynsey Askew cleaning up the middle order with figures of 3-10 off four overs.
The ACT lost just two wickets in their chase, with Leonie Coleman top-scoring, unbeaten on 49.
Opening right-hander Carly Ryan hit an unbeaten 48 for the Tasmanians, more than half her team's total.
Ryan struck two boundaries, and put together a 40-run partnership with first drop Emma Thompson for the second wicket.
Thompson was caught off the bowling of Askew, which sparked the loss of three more wickets for just 21 runs, as the game's leading wicket-taker took charge of the match in her four-over spell.
Veronika Pyke put on a 34-run stand with Ryan for the sixth wicket to give the hosts a total to bowl with.
However, the Meteors rained on the home side's parade, hitting the winning runs in the 15th over to finish on 2-97.
Coleman's 49 came off just 56 balls, and included four boundaries.
Spirit edge Fury in thriller, 29 October 2010, Sportal
The Vic Spirit have defeated Western Fury by four wickets in a thrilling Women's T20 match at the Geelong Cricket Ground on Friday afternoon.
After the Fury posted 6-125 from their 20 overs, the Spirit survived some jitters before reaching the required target in the final over of the match.
Fury opening batswoman Jenny Wallace anchored the Fury's innings with a run-a-ball 41 before Kath Hempenstall trapped her lbw in front.
Nicole Bolton chipped in with 16 off as many balls before she was run out by Jess Cameron to leave the Fury struggling at 4-77.
Rene Farrell (24) and captain Peta Merrilees (29 not out) ensured the Vics would have a tough run chase as they added valuable runs at the end.
Sarah Elliot was the pick of the Victorian bowlers with 2-22, while Briana Binch (1-21) and Hempenstall (1-20) picked up one each.
The Spirit made a steady start with Elyse Villani smashing four boundaries in her knock of 23, while Jess Cameron contributed 39 to have the hosts in control.
But Kate Pulford removed them both with a pair of run outs to reduce the Vics to 4-99.
That became 6-99 three balls later after Rennee Chappell got two wickets, but captain Rachael Haynes (17 not out) and Binch (10 not out) successfully steered the Spirit home with five balls to spare.
Breakers douse Fire, 29 October 2010, Sportal
The New South Wales Breakers have comprehensively beaten the Queensland Fire by 69 runs in the women's T20 competition at Allan Border Field on Friday afternoon.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, the Breakers posted an imposing 4-166 from their 20 overs and the Fire were never in the hunt with their reply, restricted to just 8-97.
Skipper Alex Blackwell and Leah Poulton gave NSW the ideal start with a magnificent 108-run opening stand.
Poulton smashed 55 from 42 balls, while Blackwell hit 43 from 32 before both were dismissed in the space of three balls.
It did little to stop the momentum though as Lisa Sthalekar and Sarah Coyte put on 48 runs to help the Breakers to a formidable total.
Queensland shared the wickets around with Courtney Hill (1-30), Grace Harris (1-38), Selena Tainton (1-21) and Kathryn Jenkin (1-20) all taking one wicket each.
The Fire's run chase started disastrously with Lyndall Daley dismissed from the second ball of Ellyse Perry's opening over.
Fran Whittaker and Jessica Jonassen knuckled down for a 63-run second-wicket stand before Sthalekar accepted a return catch from Jonassen when she was on 39.
Spinner Angela Reakes then got in on the act with the wickets of Leteysha Randall (4), Danielle Hollis (5), Fran Whittaker (20) and Grace Harris (5) in a devastating spell that yielded 4-19.
To Queensland's credit they batted out their overs, reaching 8-97.
"Allan Border Field is normally perfect for batting but it wasn't today. The outfield was damp and there was some movement in the pitch," said Leah Poulton.
"It was tough early on and their opening bowlers did quite a good job. But a few things started to go our way and we got some momentum."

Run rate costs Scorpions, 18 October 2010, Sportal
South Australia have fallen short in their bid to chase Western Fury's 7-119 despite having eight wickets in hand at the end of the match in the Women's Twenty20 match at the WACA on Monday.
The six-run win squares the ledger after the Scorpions beat the hosts in Saturday night's match.
Batting first, the Fury posted 119 thanks to opener Lauren Stammers, who hit 57 from 64 balls.
Shelley Nitschke (2- 20), Meagan Schutt (2-10) and Cara Fiebig (2-21) did the damage with the ball for the South Australians.
In reply, the Scorpions made a positive start and reached 0-45 before Nitschke was bowled by Kate Pulford for 14.
Fellow opener Karen Rolten (52 from 60), in a partnership with No.3 batter Julie Woerner (24 not out from 36 balls), pushed the total to 84 before the second wicket fell when Lauren Shave snared the key wicket of Rolton.
From there the visitors could not lift their run rate and with 28 needed from the final two overs there was too much to ask of Woerner, who hit just one boundary in her knock, and new batter Lauren Ebsary (11 not out from seven balls).
The bowling heroes for the Fury were Pulford (1-14 from four overs), who piled on the pressure with tight bowling early, while Shave (1-27) and Rene Farrell (0-14 from four overs) bowled the tense final overs that ultimately secured the win.
The Fury next take on the in-form Vic Spirit on October 29 in Melbourne, while the Scorpions face Queensland Fire on November 12.
Fury topple Scorpions, 17 October 2010, Sportal
The Western Fury have recorded a comfortable 89-run win over South Australia to open their 2010/11 WNCL campaign in perfect fashion at the WACA on Sunday.
After posting a hefty 8-262 from their 50 overs, the Fury bowlers then ensured the visitors never seriously threatened a win, rolling the Scorpions for 173.
Opening bowler Rene Farrell (3-22) and spinner Mel Holmes (3-19) did the bulk of the damage, while Kate Pulford also chimed in with 2-43.
The Scorpions made a horrendous start to their run chase, losing their first four wickets for just eight runs before Julie Woerner and Karen Rolton combined for a brilliant 102-run stand.
But Rolton's dismissal ended any faint hope the visitors had of chasing down the total, eventually bowled out in the 46th over.
Earlier, after winning the toss and electing to bat, the Fury dominated the Scorpions bowling attack on their way to their imposing total.
Opener Jenny Wallace top scored for the home side with 59 from just 65 balls, including eight boundaries.
Peta Merrilees and Lauren Stammers were the other major contributors for the Fury with 49 and 47 respectively.
Megan Schutt and Cara Fiebig were the pick of the Scorpions bowlers with two wickets each.
Lanning fires Spirit, 17 October 2010, Sportal
Vic Spirit, powered by a brilliant 79 from teenager Meg Lanning, have cruised to a comfortable 56-run win over the ACT Meteors in their Twenty20 clash at Manuka Oval on Sunday.
Lanning led the way with a brutal 79 off just 37 balls as Victoria compiled 4-165 in their 20 overs and then dismissed the home side for just 109.
With Spirit pair Kristen Beams (dislocated shoulder) and Clea Smith (suspected eye socket damage) both ruled out, the visitors gave three players their T20 debuts, Cassie Brock, Naomi Fullwood and Anna Lanning. Skipper Rachael Haynes won the toss and decided to bat on a cool Canberra morning and sat back as her openers did a terrific job.
Meg Lanning hit 11 fours and three sixes in a 10-over cameo which powered the Spirit to 104 before she was bowled by Kris Britt (1-23) while Elyse Villani provided plenty of support compiling a patient 23.
She was trapped by Kate Owen (1-20) when the score was on 106 while Jess Cameron (6) fell soon after to leave things delicately poised at 3-111 in the 14th over. But Haynes (35 off 24) and Sarah Elliott (20 off 18) combined to help the Spirit to an imposing 4-165.
Leonie Coleman (37 off 26) tried to keep the Meteors on target but after she fell when the score was on 2-65, things quickly went downhill. Four run outs and three wickets from Haynes (3-16), who had an excellent game with bat and ball, saw the home side lose their last seven wickets for just 25 runs.
The innings lasted just 17.2 overs with ACT dismissed well short, with Spirit completing a weekend double after winning Saturday's WNCL clash comfortably following Friday's T20 match was washed out.
Breakers complete Tassie clean sweep, 17 October 2010, Sportal
Big scores from Alyssa Healy and Sarah Coyte helped the NSW Breakers beat Tasmania by seven wickets in their Women's National League Twenty20 match at North Sydney Oval on Sunday.
The win gave the Breakers a clean sweep of their three matches against Tasmania, after winning the first Twenty20 game on Friday, also by seven wickets, followed by a 235-run win in the 50-over match on Saturday.
Batting first, Tasmania's openers set the tone for the innings, putting on 60 runs in quick time before Lynsey Da Costa was run out for 32.
Carly Ryan and Erin Burns then put on 35 for the second wicket. The duo looked untroubled at the crease and the partnership was only broken when a direct hit from Lisa Sthalekar resulted in Ryan run out for 34.
At 2-95 from 14 overs, the Tasmanians were in an excellent position to launch an all out attack in the final few overs and the third wicket partnership between Burns and Julia Price delivered just what they needed. They put on 47 runs in the last five overs to take the Roar to 3-142 at the end of their innings.
Price was run out on the final ball of the 20th over 19 while Burns continued her impressive weekend by finishing 45 not out from 40 balls, including one big six onto the roof of the O'Reilly Stand.
After missing out on runs in the first two games of the triple-header, Healy started the NSW innings off with a bang, hitting a six and four respectively off the first two balls of the opening over. The last ball of the first over also cleared the boundary.
Healy was in exceptional touch as she dispatched the Tasmanian attack all over the ground. She took 21 runs off the fourth over which included one six and three fours, including one boundary from a free hit holding out in the next over for 37 from 17 balls.
Leah Poulton was the next wicket to fall, caught on the mid-wicket fence for 19 before Coyte and Ellyse Perry put on 51 runs for the third wicket. When Perry was out, caught and bowled for 25 from 24 balls, Coyte took centre stage. She finished not out on 48 as she guided the team home in 18th over, taking out the Player of the Match award in the process.
"It was a really good wicket to bat on. It was pretty flat after two days of cricket. I thought we bowled pretty well but our fielding let us down. But to restrict them to 140 after they were flying in the first 12 overs – I thought we did a pretty good job. If we had held our catches it might have been a bit different, but that's cricket," said Healy.
Coyte said the team was happy to come away from the opening round with three wins, but highlighted the side's fielding as an area to work on.
"It was good to get a few cobwebs out. Our fielding was not 100 percent and we were a bit disappointed there. But we picked it up with the bat and I am sure we've got plenty more good innings to come," she said.
Scorpions score win at the WACA, 16 October 2010, Sportal
SA Scorpions have opened their new Women's Twenty20 season with a win over Western Fury at the WACA Ground on Saturday.
Batting first, the Scorpions managed 7-121 after seeing out their 20 overs and thanks to some economical bowling and tight fielding, the visitors restricted the Fury to 9-110 to seal the match.
Making good use of the toss, ICC Womens Cricketer of the Year Shelley Nitschke (49) and Karen Rolton (33) gave the visitors an ideal platform in the first nine overs.
The pair reached an opening partnership of 70 before Rolton was trapped lbw by leg-spinner Renee Chappell.
Lauren Ebsary, playing against her former side, was next to go after she was run out for 11.
From there, the breaks were applied, with Chappell (2-16 from four overs) and off-spinner Avril Fahey (2-14 from four overs) curtailing the home side's end-of-innings charge.
But in reply, the Fury weren't able to build any momentum as wickets continually fell at crucial stages.
The Western Australians lost 3-0 during the fifth and sixth overs and never recovered.
Fast bowler Meagan Schutt (2-12 from four overs) troubled the batters with her pace while Rolton (2-21) also chimed in with two important breakthroughs.
The Fury's Peta Merrilees top scored for her side with 25 from 33 balls, but it was her lack of support from the middle order that ultimately cost the Fury the points.
Spirit ease home, 16 October 2010, Sportal
Vic Spirit have opened their 2010/11 WNCL campaign with a comfortable six-wicket win over the ACT Meteors in their One Day match at Manuka Oval in Canberra on Saturday afternoon.
Briana Binch led the way with 4-26 from eight overs in the first session as the visitors rolled the Meteors for just 134 in the 36th over and while the Spirit wobbled a little at 3-37 Meg Lanning made an unbeaten 54 and Emma Inglis chimed in with 21 as they reached 4-135 in just 25.1 overs.
The hosts made an encouraging start with openers Leonie Coleman and Laura Wright putting on 34 but after Sarah Elliott (2-24 from eight overs) made the initial breakthrough the next-best union was just 25 for the fourth wicket between Kris Britt (24) and Lisa Kuschert (21).
Wright's dismissal with the score on 50 was quickly followed by that of Kate Owen for a duck and when Britt fell making it 4-77 it soon became 5-78 when Sara Hungerford was dismissed first ball by Binch who by that time had her four wickets.
From there the only real resistance was provided by Kuschert, whose 54-ball knock eventually came to an end when she was run out by Smith, and Rebecca McRae, who scored 18 from 19 balls.
The Spirit's innings began poorly when Rachael Haynes was sent on her way for a six-ball duck but things got worse when Elyse Villani was dismissed for 25 by Owen (1-17) and Jess Cameron (0) followed almost immediately after.
But while Lynsey Askew bobbed up again to send Elliott on her way with the score on 82 - on the way to finishing with 2-23 from eight overs - Lanning and Inglis comfortably added the 53 runs required from that point to complete the easy victory.
Having had their first Twenty20 clash abandoned on Friday because of rain, the teams will go head-to-head again in the shortest form of the game on Sunday at Manuka Oval.
Record-breaking Breakers trounce Roar, 16 October 2010, Sportal
The NSW Breakers have set a Women's National League record posting 5-395 to defeat Tasmania Roar by 235 runs in their 50-over match at North Sydney Oval on Saturday.
The Breakers smashed the previous best of 3-309 set by the ACT last season to pick up two bonus points along the way.
The hosts elected to bat after winning the toss with skipper Alex Blackwell top scoring with 157 from 111 balls, including 17 fours and one six.
Blackwell's huge knock, just three runs shy of Tasmania's total, was also the second highest individual total in the history of the National League, and the highest ever score by a NSW player.
Leah Poulton and Lisa Sthalekar were the other major contributors for NSW with 86 and 75 respectively.
The young Tasmanian side fought hard with the bat but eventually succumbed for 160 with Erin Burns top scoring for the visitors with 51.
Ellyse Perry tore through the Tasmanian attack with figures of 4-10 from 7.4 overs.
Amidst a number of excellent individual performances, Blackwell was named Player of the Match for her 157.
"I was quite determined, once I got to 100, to see if I could push myself to 150. I've never done that before. I didn't have any records in mind but as a personal milestone I just wanted to make sure I kicked on," said Blackwell.
"As a team, never once have we ever spoken about making 400 runs before, but by the end (of our innings) today we were aiming for 400. All the way through our innings we had our goals, and in the end we fell just short of that," she added.
NSW will meet Tasmania again tomorrow in the second Twenty20 fixture after NSW won the opening T20 on Friday.
Breakers crush Roar, 15 October 2010, Sportal
The NSW Breakers have made a flying start to their 2010/11 Women's National League Twenty20 campaign, notching a comfortable seven-wicket win over Tasmania at North Sydney Oval on Friday.
The Breakers won the toss and had no hesitation in sending Tasmania in to bat on a greenish wicket and that decision proved to be a fruitful one with NSW restricting the Tasmanians to 9-85 from their 20 overs.
In reply, the Breakers eased to the target with captain Alex Blackwell steadying the ship after the home side had found themselves at 3-45, with 40 not out from 24 balls, including two consecutive boundaries to reel in the total.
The Breakers started their chase with real intent as openers Leah Poulton and Alyssa Healy put on 29 runs from 17 balls before Healy was bowled for 10.
Poulton was dismissed for 19 shortly after and when Lisa Sthalekar was caught behind for two the Tasmanians were back in it with the Breakers slumping to 3-45, before Blackwell's intervention.
Debutant Kara Sutherland bounced back from an expensive second over to earn the Player of the Match award for her 3-24 from four overs while Ellyse Perry, Sharon Millanta, Lisa Sthalekar and Sarah Coyte took one wicket each.
After her first National League game, Sutherland said there were plenty of nerves but she was rapt to claim player of the match honours.
"I was just really glad to get out there. Alex really stuck by me after the second over wasn’t so great but I got through it alright and it was just great to be out there with the team," she said.
"Getting that first ball out was something I was looking forward to and I settled down a bit after that."
The sides will play a second Twenty20 game on Sunday and a 50 over fixture on Saturday.
Meteors-Spirit match abandoned, 15 October 2010, Sportal
The Twenty20 match between the ACT Meteors and Victoria Spirit in the Women's National Cricket League has been abandoned after persistent rain rendered conditions unplayable.
DEC Spirit, the reigning WNCL Twenty20 champs, traveled to Manuka Oval in the nation's capital but will have to wait until Saturday where the sides are set to play a 50-over match.
The forecast tomorrow reads slighly better but rain is still expected.
T20 changing the face of women's cricket, 13 October 2010, Melanie Jones
In a relatively short period of time the T20 format has dramatically changed the face of cricket globally.
You only have to look at the Airtel Champions League, Indian Premier League, KFC Big Bash, and back-to-back World Cups to highlight the impact the shorter version of the game has had on us all.
The question being asked in the women's game is, do we play more of this format and what could the consequences be?
The Southern Stars lost the semifinal of the 2009 Twenty20 World Cup to eventual winners England, in a classic battle at The Oval.
Ten months later, with the Australian men cheering them on from the stands, they defeated New Zealand on the last ball to win the second Twenty20 World Cup title.
The success of the women's game as a result of the combined men and women events, is now being felt in a number of ways, but most significantly for state cricket, in the format change at the national competition level this season.
In 1996 the Women's National Cricket League was introduced replacing a two-week tournament that consisted of one and two day games.
The new format came into line with other female national competitions being played over weekends in a home and away one-day format.
Aimed at strengthening Australia’s performances internationally and providing a competitive and attractive competition nationally, the WNCL has produced many of the world's best cricketers and put women's cricket into every state cricket calendar annually.
With 13 years of operating on a one-day format, the push now to incorporate more Twenty20 games came from administrators above and below the state level and has the opportunity of again changing the face of women's cricket.
For years the research has shown that at a grass roots level the shorter Twenty20 version gives a greater opportunity for young girls to get involved.
The reduction in time commitment means cricket has a greater opportunity to compete with other sports as well as giving time-poor families more flexibility to supports everyone's pursuits.
This is a key factor as for years game development departments at State and Territory Associations have been hearing that that the battle to attract new players is about the entertainment factor and the time commitment.
From a playing perspective the introduction of Twenty20 double headers at national and international tournaments means larger crowds, television exposure and a real sense of state or country allegiances.
It also means that state coaches and players will be going through an adjustment of programs and specialist skill development for players to address the unique nature of T20 cricket in comparison to one-day cricket.
With another World Cup now in the equation the real question isn't whether more Twenty20 cricket is the right way to go, but can we offer enough match opportunities within both formats to ensure we are producing the best squads to win both titles?
So with each women's state weekend now incorporating two Twenty20 matches and one one-dayer, there will be a few questions that this summer season should answer.
Will it see the end of some players' careers due to an inability to adapt to the demands of Twenty20? Maybe.
Will it see different squads selected for the different formats? Possibly. Will it give cricket a greater opportunity of attracting the best athletes when it comes to choosing a sport? Definitely!
This summer is about to herald another extremely important era in the development of the women's game but also an exciting opportunity to win over the hearts and minds of a new generation of skilled and entertaining cricketers.
WNCL season preview, 12 October 2010, Melanie Jones
This year's Women's National Cricket League season will see a new format, new teams and new captains. The question though is with only a few days to go before round one, who is in the best shape to take out the T20 and WNCL titles.
ACT
The ACT Meteors impressed in their first WNCL season and will again prove to be more than competitive this season.
Growing squad confidence from wins over eventual champions NSW and their third placing last season will have them in well in the mix this summer.
After an outstanding season averaging 58 Kate Owen will be the lynch pin to their batting foundations.
Captain Kris Britt will again provide wicket taking opportunities with her leg spin and will be joined by former England International Lynsey Askew to strengthen their bowling stocks.
NSW
For the first time in eight years the Blackwell twins won't be pulling on the sky blue together.
The retirements of Kate Blackwell and Sarah Andrews comes as Alex Blackwell takes over the reins from long serving captain Lisa Sthalekar.
With increasing training and playing work load and opportunities outside of cricket presenting themselves the senior duo are leaving the Breakers having been an integral part of the states decade of dominance.
The change in leadership roles has been forced in part by Blackwell's promotion to Australian captain through injury to regular captain Jodie Fields.
Alex Blackwell and new coach Neil McDonald will offer a fresh start for a state that has been the stand out performer since the WNCL began in 1996/97.
Queensland
The loss of the Queensland's most senior and experienced players in Melissa Bulow and Kirstin Pike is a huge loss for the Fire.
The former Australian players were the stand out performers last year giving a young Queensland side the invaluable leadership.
Bulow amassed 481 runs at 60, with Pike snaring 19 wickets to finish third over the season.
With Jodie Fields recovering from hamstring surgery that prevented her leading Australia to the T20 World Cup in May, this year places a lot of question marks over their line up.
However, look out for Jess Jonassen who continues to improve and impress with her left arm orthodox and middle order hitting.
The Fire will be hoping to offer a few sparks over the summer but realistically it will be a season to build on for years to come.
SA
In what could be the last year we see the sublime talent that is Karen Rolton, will the squad have the depth to make it a year to remember for all the right reasons?
The match winning capabilities of Shelley Nitschke and the return of Lauren Ebsary from WA will give the Scorpion fans some hope of this.
Depth has always been the main component holding back a serious South Australian challenge at a title.
Julie Woerner's top order hitting could be the x factor in both formats however a number of bowlers will need to take the step up to provide the all round support needed for consistent wins.
TAS
After having a taste of national cricket in the T20 competition last season the Cripps Tasmanian Roar will be on another large learning curve with inclusion in the WNCL.
Cricket Tasmania have responded to their inclusion with a revamp of their high performance program to offer the players and coaching staff the best opportunity of building a foundation to develop a wave of Australian cricketers like their men’s program has.
Leading that charge is opening quick Katelyn Fryett who at just 17 will be aiming at being Australia's fastest bowler.
Having chalked up a win last year and having two other opportunities to surprise more experienced states the Roar will be keen to impress.
VIC
The DEC Spirit will be looking to continue their T20 success from last year and carry it over into the WNCL with their last title coming back in 2004/05.
The Victorian's come into the season with the most stable squad in regards to movements with only the retirement of Kelly Applebee over the winter.
Club movements to assist State and Australian development have resulted in some healthy internal selection battles.
The keeping spot will be keenly fought for between current keeper Emma Inglis and Jess Cameron who has taken it back up recently and moved clubs to pursue it.
WA
The loss of Lauren Ebsary, who is heading home to Adelaide, has been softened by the inclusion of New Zealand International Kate Pulford.
The dynamic allrounder will be more than keen to test out the bounce of the Perth pitches and will give some strong hitting power to complement Bambury and Wallace in the top order.
Rene Farrell and Jess Moyes lead the way with the ball in 09/10 and will look to Australian Shooting Star Squad member Gemma Triscari to complement a varied attack.
A few early wins could see them having a big influence on the finals make up.
Mel's Tip
The race to become the first side to win the T20 and WNCL in the same year will be a tough battle and one that will provide some entertaining games across the country and season.
It would be hard to go past a repeat of last year's finals with the Spirit and NSW Breakers continuing rivalry. And if events in Australia recently are anything to go by, don't discount a few ties on the way.
Tasmania join WNCL, 15 June 2010, Cricket Australia
Tasmania has been added to the Women's National Cricket League (WNCL) for the 2010-11 season.
After their debut in the women's interstate Twenty20 last season, Cricket Australia accepted a submission by Cricket Tasmania to also include its senior women's team in the 50-over interstate competition from this season.
Tasmania's entry into the WNCL, where they will join Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and ACT, raises the number of states playing in CA's two elite women's cricket competitions to seven.
"Tasmania's acceptance into the WNCL is testament to the efforts of Cricket Tasmania to develop women's cricket in the state," Cricket Australia CEO James Sutherland said.
"The team produced some encouraging performances in the interstate Twenty20 competition last year and regular exposure to matches at this level will help drive women's cricket participation in Tasmania."
"Female cricket participation in Australia has risen dramatically in recent years and today's announcement, along with the continued success of the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars, will only inspire more young girls to pick up a bat and ball."
With the Cripps Tasmanian Roar's inclusion, the 2010/11 WNCL match schedule will now be developed over the coming weeks.
The early rounds of the competition will serve as an important selection trial before the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars - the 2010 ICC World Twenty20 champions - meet England, winners of the 2009 ICC Women's Cricket World Cup and 2009 ICC World Twenty20, at home in early 2011.
